We acquired our family surname from the Nesmiths of Scottish-Irish descent, in Nesmith, Williamsburg County, South Carolina, who were among the original settlers in Williamsburg County, SC.
The name is said to have originated in this way: Between September 8, 1249, when Alexander III, of Scotland was crowned...and March 16, 1286, when he died, an aide-de-camp was required to mend his armor. In short, he messed up. But for his prowess, great daring, and achievements in battle, he was knighted by the king, with this laconic saying, "Although he is nae smith (no smith), he is a brave gentleman".
