About William Tilley


Biography

William Tilley, son of William Tilley and Alice Davenish, was bp. 8 Feb. 1606/7. Passenger of the Abigail from London in 1635. Married in New England in 1640 to Alice (Frost) Blower. He was a wine merchant living in Cape Porpoise (now in Kennebunkport, Maine) on 16 April 1649 when he petitioned for the abatement of a fine of £4 for illegally selling wine. William was living as late as 27 March 1668 when he was mentioned in a Massachusetts court record.

WILLIAM TILLEY came from Holy Trinity Minories, London to Massachusetts Bay in 1635 on the Abigail (on 19 June 1635, "W[illia]m Tilly," aged 28, holding "a certificate [of conformity] from the minister of the parish of Little Miniries," was enrolled at London as a passenger for New England on the Abigail). His first residence here is unknown but in was living in Barnstable by 1640, Boston by 1647, and Cape Porpus by 1649.
OCCUPATION: Wine merchant.

EDUCATION: Signed legal documents.
OFFICEHOLDING: "Will[ia]m Tilly" was in the Barnstable section of the 1643 Plymouth Colony list of men able to bear arms. 

ESTATE: On 26 June 1649, "Alice Tilly (affirming she hath power from her husband) did grant to Anthonie Stoddard of Boston, merchant, … one dwelling house of her husband William Tillie's with the ground, yard & appurtenances to the same belonging … and Hugh Gunnison" warranteed the sale. He was born about 1607 (aged 28 on 19 June 1635; "aged about fifty-three years" on 13 April 1660). He died after 27 March 1668 (when Alice Tilly referred to herself as "the wife of William Tilly"). He married soon after 6 July 1640 (probably at Barnstable) Alice (Frost) Blower, daughter of Edward Frost and widow of THOMAS BLOWER {1635, Boston}. (On 6 July 1640, John Mayo, minister at Barnstable, certified "that the purpose of marriage betwixt Mr. Tylly of Barnestable and Mrs. Blower of Boston hath been three several times published in the meeting at Barnestable" [WP 4:262].)

ASSOCIATIONS: William Tilley may have been closely related to NATHANIEL TILLEY {1635, Unknown} who sailed for New England on the same vessel in 1635.

He was born about 1607 and was 28 years of age at the time of his migration to New England.[2] The identity of his parents and his place of birth are unknown. He may have been related to Nathaniel Tilley who sailed on the same ship in 1635.

He settled in Barnstable by 1640, Boston by 1647 and finally Cape Porpus by 1649. He was a wine merchant.

He married after 6 July 1640 probably at Barnstable to Alice (Frost) Blower, daughter of Edward Frost and widow of Thomas Blower.

He died after 27 March 1668 (when his wife referred to herself as wife of William Tilly.)

There are no known children of William Tilley and his wife Alice. While documents suggest he had a daughter Sarah who married Henry Lynn, she was his step-daughter. (See her profile for details.)
