Sir Archibald Edmonstone of Duntreath, Baronet, is the eldest son of Sir William Edmonstone of Duntreath. He was served heir to his deceased father on 20 April 1487 Edmonstone of Duntreath, p. 33

Death

Sir Archibald Edmonstone of Duntreath appears still to have been alive on 6 March 1502, when his son William is identified as his father's son and apparent heir, but he is reported to have died in the same year. Ibidem, p. 35

  • Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 3rd of Duntreath, succeeded his father and was served heir to him on 20 April 1487, and infeft in the lands of Duntreath and others, as his heir on 1 June following [4GD97/1/22]. He m. firstly, to Janet, daughter of Sir James Schaw of Sauchie, with whom, on his own resignation, he had a charter under the Great Seal for the lands of Cambuswallace on 14 February 1491[C2/12/261. Printed Vol. 1424-1513. No. 2008], and secondly, before 27 April 1498, to Janet Melville[Acta Dom Conc. Vol. ii pp. 176-77. Her mother is then referred to as Christian Balfour, wife of Alexander Inglis of Tarvit], and d. before 31 May 1503. He was father of:
    • Sir William Edmonstone, 4th of Duntreath, (see below).
    • James Edmonstone, was infeft in the lands of Ardbechlorn and Derry, in the Earldom of Strathearn, on 26 June 1506, and is then styled brother to William Edmonstone of Duntreath.7 He disponed those lands to James Reidheugh of Tulliechettill on 25 February 1511,1 and was father of…etc.
    • Janet Edmonstone, m. William Graham, 1st Earl of Montrose, (he was widow of Annabella, daughter of John, 1st Lord Drummond, and after Janet’s death, he m. thirdly, to Christina, daughter of Thomas Wavan of Stevenson, he was k. at the battle of Flodden in September of 1513).
    • Catherine Edmonstone, m. John Montgomery, Master of Eglinton, eldest son and heir of Hugh, Lord Montgomery, (c/m 1 June 1498 [GD3/2/1/16]).
    • Christian Edmonstone, m. firstly, to John, 2nd Lord Ross of Halkheid, and had issue; and secondly, to Mr. George Knolls from whom she was divorced in 1514 on the grounds that she and Grisel Rattray, his first wife, were within the forbidden degrees of consanguinity [Liber Officialias Sancti Andreas. No. 3].
    • Margaret Edmonstone, m. by 2 January 1509, to George Buchannan of that Ilk, when they had a joint charter for the lands of Strathyre, (he survived her and m. secondly, by April of 1530, Janet Cunningham. He d. in 1561,
    • Beatrix Edmonstone, m. James Muschet of Burnbank, (he d. on 13 September 1546 [Dunblane Tests], and had issue.
    • He also had a natural son: James Edmonstone in Balewin, had letters of legitimation under the Great Seal on 2 September 1533, in which he is styled natural son to the late Archibald Edmonstone of Duntreath [RMS 1546-1580. No. 838]. He had issue, (see Edmonstone of Broich & Spittal).

Sir Archibald Edmonstone, 3rd of Duntreath was born in 1450.2 He was the son of Sir William Edmonstone, 2nd of Duntreath and Matilda Stewart.3 He married Janet Shaw.2 He died in 1502.2

Biographical Summary from Edmonstone History

Sir Archibald married Janet, daughter of Sir James Shaw of Sauchie, in Stirlingshire, as is attested by a charter of the lands of Cambuswallace to Archibald Edmonstone of Duntreath, and Janet Schaw, ' sponsae suae,' 3 dated 1490 ; though this marriage must have occurred several years before, as the dates of the children's marriages prove. This Sir James Shaw had been Comptroller of Scotland to James III., and probably to his son-in-law's acting under him, the passages above quoted refer. It may be hoped, however, that the Laird of Duntreath had no part in the treacherous conduct of his father-in-law towards his unfortunate sovereign. James had appointed Sir James Shaw Governor of Stirling Castle, with a special charge over his son. This charge, according to Lindsay of Pittscottie, Sir James was bribed to surrender to the rebel Lords, and he refused the King admittance into the castle just before the disastrous battle of Sauchie, at the close of which James was assassinated. The connexion, however, was a prosperous one, for George Shaw, Abbot of Paisley and Treasurer to James IV., ' was an opulent prelate,' says Nisbet, ' and took care to provide good matches for his nieces, the daughters of his sister Janet Edmonstone, and, moreover, he procured for his nephew, Robert Shaw, to succeed him in the Abbacy of Paisley on his own resignation, and subsequently to the Bishopric of Moray.'

By this lady Sir Archibald had two sons and seven daughters. First, Sir William, who succeeded to him. Second, James, designated 'frater germanus Willielmi Edmonstone de Duntreath militis,' as a witness to a charter of alienation of the lands of Culloden to Alexander Strahan of Scotstown, A.D. 1 506. 4 From him sprung the cadet branch of Ballinton and others in the stewartry of Monteith, now extinct. The original branch of Broich probably came from the same stem. He married Agnes, daughter of James Ridheugh of Tillychadell, and was Comptroller of Scotland under James IV. 5

Five of the daughters formed honourable alliances. First, Janet married William, first Earl of Montrose. Second, Christian 1 married John, Lord Ross of Halkhead. Third, Elizabeth 2 married John, Master of Montgomery, eldest son of Hugh, first Earl of Eglinton. Fourth, Mar- garet 3 married George Buchanan of that ilk ; and fifth, Barbara 4 married Sir James Muschet of Burnbank, in Perthshire, a family at that time of distinction, but long since extinct. Sixth, Catherine. Seven, Helen, not noticed farther in the pedigree.

Sir Archibald had likewise a natural son named James, styled of Ballown, as there is a charter " Jacobi filii naturalis Archibald Edmonstone de Duntreath," dated 1553.
