About Robert de St. Clair
Robert de St. Clair, in Normandy; married Eleanor, daughter of the Count of Dreux and thus cousin of Yolande de Dreux, 2nd wife of Alexander III of Scots, and had a 2nd son (William Sinclair). (Burke's Peerage)
"Two important families bearing the name of Sinclair (or St. Clair) co-existed in the 12th century, distinguished as of Rosslyn, in Midlothian, and of Herdmanstoun, in East Lothian. Though no relationship can be traced between them, the earlier bearers of the title of Lord Sinclair belonged to the former, while the later belonged to the last named family." (Burke's Peerage)
Sir William Sinclair, according to Father Hay, was the son of Robert de Saintclair in Normandy, and his wife Eleanor, relict of Hugh, Lord of Chateauneuf, daughter to Robert, second Comte de Dreux, in France by Joland of Coucy, his wife. Father Richard Augustin Hay lived in the household of the Sinclairs of Rosslyn in the 17th century.
