About Pte. Montague Sydney Field
Montague Sydney Field was born at Hobart in Tasmania, Australia and attended Battery Point State School in Hobart. His parents were William Richard Field and Elizabeth Field (nee Pickering) who had married at St Mark's Regents Park, Prince Albert Road, Camden, London, England on 24 December 1876. The couple emigrated to Tasmania in Australia and later lived at Smithfield in Sydney. Montague's older brother was William Frederick Joseph Field who was born at Hobart on 21 February 1887. He was kicked by a horse and died of his injuries at Sandy Bay on 17 December 1892. Their mother Elizabeth also died in Tasmania. Montague and his father emigrated to New Zealand in c. 1907 and lived at Gisborne. During World War I Montague joined the Canterbury Infantry Regiment, 1st Battalion (Service No. WWI 38143). He was killed in action at Havrincourt in France on 29 September 1918, aged 25. Montague was buried in the Fifteen Ravine British Cemetery, [VI. B. 6.].
