Joseph Eduard Adolf Spier (26 June 1900 – 21 May 1978) was a popular Dutch artist and illustrator.

Jo Spier was born in Zutphen, the Netherlands. From 1924 to 1939 Jo Spier worked for the newspaper De Telegraaf where he created humorous illustrations and cartoons about everyday life. During World War II his subject matter became more political and he was arrested for his satirical depiction of Hitler. He was first sent to the camp at Westerbork, then to Villa Bouchina with his wife and three children. For a period of a few months in 1943 they were protected from transport to German concentration camps, supposedly due to the influence of the leader of the pro-German Nationaal Socialistische Beweging, Anton Mussert. On 21 April 1943 Spier was transferred to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where he was held with his family until the end of the war. During his internment in Theresienstadt, Spier also cooperated with the Germans by assisting with the film Theresienstadt, ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebied.

Jo Spier moved to the United States in 1951 with his family and continued to work until the end of his life. Spier died in Santa Fe, New Mexico on 21 May 1978.

Jo Spier was married to Albertine Sophie "Tineke" van Raalte and they had three children, Peter Spier, Thomas Spier (DDS), and Celine Spier. Peter Spier was also a noted illustrator of children's books.

Joseph Spier was een Joodse man die tot aan de oorlog voor De Telegraaf en een aantal andere grote Nederlandse bedrijven werkte. Hij verbleef tijdens de oorlog in diverse concentratiekampen. Zijn spotprenten over de nazi's werden hem niet bepaald in dank afgenomen.
Anton Mussert kende Spier al van jongs af aan en was een bewonderaar van zijn tekenwerk. Mussert 'redde' hem en zijn familie door ze onder te brengen in Villa Bouchina dat deel uitmaakte van 'Het kamp Barneveld' (link.)

Mussert zei over Jo Spier en diens vrouw: "goede vrienden van ons, geen NSB-leden. Mijn vrouw en ik gingen vaak bij hen eten".

Maar uiteindelijk werden ook de zogenaamde reserveringskampen opgedoekt en moesten de bewoners richting Theresiënstadt. Zo ook de familie Spier die daar van 21 april 1943 tot het einde van de oorlog opgesloten zat. Daar maakte Jo Spier zich echter niet geliefd bij zijn mede-gevangenen omdat hij in opdracht van de nazi's tekeningen aanbracht op de muren van de barakken en ook meewerkte aan een Duitse propagandafilm: 'Theresiënstadt. Ein Dokumentarfilm aus dem jüdischen Siedlungsgebiet'.

Ook zou hij, naar eigen zeggen in opdracht van de Duitsers, hebben ingepraat op mede-gevangenen om toch vooral maar mee te werken. Na de oorlog kwam Jo Spier vrij, maar werd met de nek aangekeken en kreeg geen werk meer waarop hij met zijn gezin naar Amerika verhuisde. Daar bouwde hij een succesvolle carrière op als tekenaar en reclame-maker.

Jo Spier overleed in 1978 in de Verenigde Staten. Zijn zoon Peter is daar, net als zijn vader dus, een succesvol tekenaar.
