About James Moses Wheeler
Militia of Wash. Cty., VA; 70th Regiment and Justice of Peace in Lawrence Co. KY.
According to the 1830 census of Lawrence County, KY, this James would have been born between 1770-1780. Since he married in 1792, it makes most sense that he was born in the early 1770s.
It is not likely that he was a son of James (died 1804) and Abigail Wheeler since he was not named as a son in their will, but he is the right age to have been a son of one of their older sons like Jesse, Oliver or Stephen, all born in the 1750s and probably in New York before the family migrated to Virginia in the late 1770s.
Lenny Caudill writes (https://www.ancestry.com/boards/thread.aspx?mv=flat&m=6001&p=surnam...):
. By 1820, Stephen Wheelor + James Wheelor + James Wheelor (Jr.?) reside in Floyd County KY p. 20 census. Lawrence County wasn’t formed until 1823 so perhaps they stayed in one place which became Lawrence by the 1830 census?
I’ve located ‘Wheeler’s Ford and believe it to be St. Paul today on the Clinch River. Wheeler’s Ford seems to be archaic. There’s a Wheeler cemetery there which includes the grave of a James C. Wheeler born about 1791 and wife Mary. James Moses Wheeler seems to have been born about 1749 and is said to be from Wheelers Ford as well.

I find plenty of deed references in Russell County in the late 1700’s for Stephen, William, and James Wheeler. Who were they and how are they related if at all? The area is waters of the south fork of Holstein River.
Response by Wayne Kottamp:
The three you mention in Floyd C. in 1820 are (1) Stephen W Wheeler who was a nephew of James Moses Wheeler (2) James Moses Wheeler and his son (3) James Harrison Wheeler. I think they were always on Hood Fork which later became Lawrence Co.
Your location of Wheeler's Ford is correct but I am not sure who that James C. Wheeler is.
James Harrison Wheeler b.1799 in Wise Co. VA and married Elizabteh Ramey.
Others write:
Is the name Moses really in the records?
I to am interested in any records that may give the name of James Wheeler, as James Moses Wheeler.
I have found deeds and the marriage license in Washington Co., VA and neither have the name of Moses on them.
Virginia Colonist Abstract Vol. 34 Date: 1782-1820 Notes: Washington Co. Marriage Register by Beverly Fleet. order thru New Papyrus Publishing Co. Actual text:
James Wheeler Married 07-Feb-1792 to Eleanor Fairleanah Harrison.
They were married by Nicholas Reagon.
There are court records in Lawrence Co., KY with the name Fairlander Wheeler, dated July 10, 1837. Eleanor Fairleanah Harrison, married James Moses Wheeler on Feb 7, 1792 in Washington Co., Virginia. It has always been said in the Wheeler family history, the Wheeler's descended from James M. Wheeler and Eleanor Harrison, a sister of President William Henry Harrison, children of Governor Benjamin Harrison of Virginia. Her mother was Elizabeth Bassett. They might have been living in what later became a part of Johnson County, Kentucky, even before Harman's Fort was built in 1789. They are buried in The Sparks Cemetery on the hill at the mouth of Sparks Branch, overlooking the sight of the old Bill Dixon home. The graves are marked with a stone with no writing on it, this is located in Lawrence County, Kentucky.
Note: Located in Eastern Kentucky along the West Virginia border, Lawrence County, Kentucky was formed on December 14, 1821 out of part of Floyd County, Kentucky.
Military - Washington County, Virginia. The Militia of Washington County, Virginia (Shows James Wheeler listed as a Captain, Campbell's Company, 70th Regiment). [This may have been a different James Wheeler]
James Wheeler was Justice of the Peace, in and for the county of Lawrence, in Kentucky by John Adair, Governor of Kentucky, in the year March 25, 1822.
He moved from Wheelers Ford, Virginia, to Kentucky about 1800. He lived at Paintsville for a time and then moved to the mouth of Hoods Creek near Blaine, in Lawrence County, Kentucky
James Moses Wheeler probably lived in Washington County, Virginia. There is a marriage record for a James Wheeler to a Fairleanah Harrison which was recorded between 1792 and 1793. This seems to be rather late to be the same person, but I have no other evidence at this time to verify.
