Isaac Chrisman, DAR Ancestor A113332, Service: VIRGINIA, Rank: SOLDIER

Isaac Chrisman is the son of Jacob and Magdalena Hite Chrisman. He and 2 family members were killed by Indians in 1776 at Rye's Cove near a fort he had built (Crissman Fort) in Lee County, Virginia.

Chrisman (Crissman) had served in the militia as a private at Glade Hollow Fort during the Point Pleasant Campaign in Virginia (now W. Virginia) in 1774, a battle with Indians which has been called "the first battle" of the Revolutionary War and is recognized by the D.A.R. as a Revolutionary War battle. Isaac is in the D.A.R. database as a Revolutionary War patriot (Ancestor #A113332).

The D.A.R. records list his year of death as 1776. I'm not positive of his burial place, but assume he was buried at the Crissman Fort near where he was killed.

Rye Cove: Rye Cove Fort (1774 - 1794), a fortified station and trading post on the Wilderness Road. It was originally called Isaac Crissman's (Sr.) Fort until 1776, when it was attacked by Cherokee Indians, killing Crissman. The property was then acquired by Thomas Carter. The fort was rebuilt in 1777 by Col. Joseph Martin and renamed Fort Lee (1) by the state militia.

Isaac was featured as an ancestor of country singer Tim McGraw and baseball player Tug McGraw on 'Who Do You Think You Are?' episode which originally aired 2/11/2011. [1]

Isaac Chrisman was killed by the Indians near his fort in Rye Cove, Scott County, Virginia in the summer of 1776. Isaac’s survivors were his wife, Jane Scott Chrisman, and children Isaac Jr., Gabriel, Nimrod, and possibly Catherine. After Isaac Chrisman Senior’s death, his widow married Nathaniel Hix and the family moved to the Rocky Station area of Lee County, Virginia. Hix was appointed guardian of his stepson Isaac Chrisman Jr., and Hix obtained two land grants issued in the name of Isaac Chrisman Jr. When a survey was made for his grant, the surveyor clearly showed a “station” or fort was located within the bounds of the survey (1), and he also shows the location of the “Rock Spring” near the “Station”. This spring still exists.

“ Jane/Jean was born in 1740. In 1761 she married Issac Chrisman and they raised a family of five children. When Issac was killed by the Indians, she remarried to Nathan Hix (Hicks). Jane/Jean passed away in 1825.”

His property was right on the border of Indian territory, so he really put his family at risk by doing that.
