Gershom Moore, was born in Newton, New York (now Elmhurst, on Long Island) by 1670, the son of Gershom Moore and grandson of the Rev. John Moore who first settled at Newtown.
Gershom's father died around 1691. On 26 October 1691, Gershom Moore sold 20 acres at Newtown to his brother Jonathan Moore.[1]
Gershom and his brother Jonathan appeared next to each other as heads-of-household in a census of the inhabitants of Newtown taken in 1698.[2] Gershom's household had four individuals, while Jonathan's had five. It would seem, then, that between them they may have had several more children than researchers have been able to place (although it is also possible that some of the household members here were not in Gershom's and Jonathan's nuclear families).
Gershom was elected to public office in Newtown several times:[3][4]
17 April 1696 — Gershom Moor was chosen assessor for the town of Newtown for the year.
17 December 1700 — Gershom Moore was chosen constable
24 January 1703 — Gershom Moore was chosen commissioner of highways
2 February 1704 — Gershom Moore, was again chosen assessor
The disambiguation section in the notes below gives reasoning that likely both Gershom and his brother Jonathan had sons named Gershom. It then argues that there are two reasonable possibilities, the first being more likely:
- The 1704 record above is the last record of Gershom alive, and records of his son Gershom and nephew Gershom then surface starting in 1715
- Gershom lived at Newtown until after 1715 and then removed to Maidenhead, New Jersey, where he died in 1722.
Children (deprecated)

Margaret b. abt. 1698 Hopewell, Mercer, NJ - d. 1752 Hopewell, Hunterdon, NJ.[5]
Margaret Moore Hunt was probably a granddaughter of the Rev. John Moore and most likely the daughter of his son Gershom and Gershom's wife Mary Fish, the widow of Jonathan Fish.
