Biography

Colonel Robert Crossman, son of Robert Crossman and Sarah Kingsbury, was born 3 Aug 1657 at Taunton, Plymouth Colony, and died at Taunton, now in Bristol County, Massachusetts, between 20 August 1736 (date will written) and 18 April 1738 (date will proved).

Robert married Hannah Brooks (1659-1700) on July 21, 1679 at Taunton. She was the daughter of Gilbert Brooks and his wife Elizabeth.

Robert built his first house about 1700 at 78 Cohannet Street, Taunton, MA and still standing: It served as a Home, Tavern, Inn, and Revolutionary Soldiers Headquarters through the years. A pen and ink sketch by F.W.Hull was printed in the August 10, 1937 edition of the Taunton Daily Gazette.

Robert Crossman (2nd) - Purchased the Grist Mill. He was a large landowner a selectman, representative to the General Court. American Ancestry 1891, Vol. VI - page 197

Will

The will of Robert Crossman is dated 20 August 1736 and was proved 18 April 1738. [1] It opens with the statement that he was aged seventy eight years. The will names:

  • son Nathaniel Crossman (named executor)
  • grandsons Stephen and Nathaniel Crossman
  • grandchildren Seth Crossman (under 21), Jeremiah, Robert, Sarah, Susannah, and Hannah Crossman, children of his son Seth Crossman
  • daughter-in-law Susannah Crossman and her children
  • daughter Hannah Packerd, late of Bridgwater, and her children Israel and Robert Packerd
  • daughter Elisabeth Liscomb, her husband Francis Liscomb
  • grandchildren Robert Liscomb and Richard Liscomb, their sister Elisabeth Codding, and the children of Mary Willmouth deceased

Estate notes

2 May 1747: Petition noting that of the grandchildren Jeremiah, Robert, Sarah, Susannah and Hannah Crosman were given several pieces of undivided land, and "som of s'd children being ded" with heirs, specifically mentioning a two year old minor child of Hannah, request guardians be appointed and division made. Signed by William Hoskins Jr guardian for Sarah['s] Child, Benj'a Hodges guardian for Robbard Crosmon. 16 Jun 1748: Division among Jeremiah Robert Sarah Susannah and Hannah children of Seth Crosman late of s'd Taunton deceased: 1/30 part (appears to be 1/6 of Jeremiah's 1/5, he leaving no issue) to each of: Susannah Crosman mother to the deceased Jeremiah; to Seth Crossman brother to the deceased Jeremiah; to Robert Crossman; to the representatives of Sarah she being deceased; to Susannah; to Hannahs representatives (she being dead)
