About Andronikos Palaiologos, governor-general

Andronikos Komnenos Palaiologos (Greek: Ἀνδρόνικος Κομνηνός Παλαιολόγος; c. 1190 – 1248/52), was a governor-general of Thessalonica and Grand domestic (megas domestikos) of the Empire of Nicaea. He was the father of the Byzantine emperor Michael VIII Palaiologos, the founder of the Palaeologue dynasty. .. ...

Andronikos was the son of the megas doux Alexios Palaiologos and Irene Komnene. We will take into account that his parents married ca. 1180 and that his brother Michael must be his elder to fix his birth ca. 1190. His son Emperor Michael VIII tells us that Andronikos descends from imperial princesses and "sons-in-law" of emperors, which in our opinion must designate in the paternal line Anna Doukaina and her husband George Palaiologos, γαμβρος (brother-in-law?) of Alexios I Komnenos and in the maternal line Maria Komnena and her husband John Kantakouzenos, γαμβρος of Manuel I Komnenos. This character is sometimes designated with the patronymic of Komnena that he inherited from his mother.

The appointment of Andronikos Palailogos as grand domestic is attributed sometimes to Theodore I Laskaris (1204–1222), sometimes, and this is more likely, to John Vatatzes who became emperor in January 1222. In 1224 the grand domestic Andronikos Palaiologos was charged...

 The Palaeologan dynasty

The Palaeologans were originally petty rulers from Macedonia. The family was an old one (George Palaeologus was a friend of Alexius I Comnenus), but its earliest generations are unknown. The first to marry into an imperial family was one Alexius Palaeologus, whose wife was a granddaughter of Zoe Dukaina, youngest daughter of Constantine X, and her husband Adrianus Comnenus, younger brother of Emperor Alexius I. Another Alexius Palaeologus married Irene Angelina, eldest daughter of Alexius III and the Ethiopian-descended Euphrosyne Camatera. The latter couple's daughter Theodora Palaeologina married her cousin Andronicus Palaeologus, who descended from Zoe. The couple were the progenitors of the Imperial dynasty. Their son was emperor Michael VIII.
