Brief Life History of Abraham

Abraham was apprenticed by his mother to John HOOD, ...eventually taken by his stepfather, Roger SHAW who had two other TILTON boys IN his household. Abraham was a house-wright and mill-wright. He was in Kittery in 1668 and in Wells from 18 Jun 1670 to at least 7 Oct 1673, when he was one of two surveyors who reported to the court that a road to Casco from Wells would involve too many bridges to be built.

He was a selectman in 1649 and a constable in 1654; also in later years he was commissioner for small cases. Abraham Tilton b c 1641, d 28 March 1728 m (1) Mary Cram; (2) Deliverance Littlefield. He was the son of William Tilton & Susanna.

Family

Abraham married Mary Cram 25 Jan 1665/6 in Hampton, NH and the family moved to Kittery, ME soon after. In 1670 the Tiltons removed to Wells where Francis Littlefield Sr (a.k.a. - The Elder) was a Tilton neighbor. Mary released her dower in the 1671/2 deed to Myles Thompson and Israel Hodgsdon, dying within a few years. The first child of Abraham and Deliverance was Sarah, but there is no birth information for her. Their second child was Abigail who was born 1 Apr 1679 in Ipswich, MA.

Deliverance mentions her three step-sons (the children of Mary Cram), calling them "my three sons - Abraham Tilton, Samuel Tilton, & Isaac Tilton" in her will.

A headstone for Abraham was noted as existing at this cemetery by Walter Davis in his book The Ancestry of Phebe Tilton, sometime prior to the 1940s. The inscription on the headstone was recorded in that book. However, the headstone has since disappeared. According to the history of the Tilton family written by Francis Tilton, the cemetery is situated on land formerly owned by Abraham Tilton.

"When the meeting house was completed in 1700, the committee appointed for that purpose assigned to Mr. Abraham Tilton, Sen'r, and Abraham Tilton, Jun'r, ye 1st pew on ye east of ye pulpit for their wives and families; a passage to be allowed thro sd pew to Mr. Wardwell's pew.

To Mr. Tilton, Sen'r, was appointed a place on ye first of ye short seats, near the pulpit, among the most elderly men."

Abraham was a carpenter and millwright. He was apprenticed to John Hoodweaver of Lynn December 5, 1653. At Kittery 1669, Wells 1671. Freeman 1681. He set up family life in Maine. • Notes: From the records it appears that some time before November, 1655, young Abraham Tilton was sent by the Hoods (John and Elizabeth) of Lynn, who had him under a contract of apprenticeship, to his brother, Peter Tilton, in Connecticut, much against Abraham's will. Elizabeth Hood, wife of John Hood who was then in England, in her deposition of November, 1655, states that her husband had instructed her to turn Abraham over to his mother, Susanna Shaw, hut as she had died in January of that year she could not fulfill her husband's instructions and so on the advice of the Elders at Lynn she "had putt him (Abraham) over to Peter Tilton living in Coneticott for thirty Shillings." From another deposition in the case it appears that Elizabeth Hood had done this against the advice of Roger Shaw who wanted his step-son turned over to him and who had obtained a court order for the· custody of Abraham. Elizabeth Hood pleaded ignorance of this court order in favor of Roger Shaw. We suspect the thirty shillings from Peter Tilton as probably against nothing from Roger Shaw had determined her action. Young Abraham was not content or happy with his elder and perhaps strict brother, Peter Tilton, and it appears that he was not long with him in Connecticut. He was returned by Peter Tilton to Abraham's step-father, Roger Shaw at Hampton, where the boy probably felt more at home with Roger Shaw's children and his own brothers.
