On 29-30 September, 2019, the profile for Walter Allen of Newbury was updated and merged with a duplicate. Unfortunately this resulted in three sets of data from my 2018 text [Walter Allen, of Newbury] in the overview of the profile. Below is the original data of the profile, which should be used to replace the overview. This is the first part of the present overview. Source 4 is not correct.

Parents Elnathan Allen and Anne Allen (Tench), married in St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England on Dec 10, 1601.

Walter Allen was born about Dec 1602, baptized 19 Dec 1602 in St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England (Parish Registers of St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England, Microfiche; Suffolk Record Office, Ipswich. Book 2, Baptisms 1558-1656; Marriages 1558-1652; Burials 1558-1649; Register Reference No. FL 545/4/2). He died on Jul 8 1681 in Charlestown, MA. (111) (NEHGR, V 111, P. 314) (ACAG p 275, V.6).

The St. Mary, Bury St. Edmunds, Suffolk, England, parish registers show increased deaths that suggest outbreaks of Black Plague in Bury St. Edmunds: 1544-1545, 1556-1559, 1579-1580, 1610-1612 (infant of Elnathan Allen), 1615-1616, 1623, 1626-1627, 1637 and 1640 (death of Elnathan Allen) (see Black Death: https://www.saylor.org/site/wp-content/uploads/2011/06/Black-Death.pdf. "The most general outbreaks in Tudor and Stuart England seem to have begun in 1498, 1535, 1543, 1563, 1589, 1603, 1625, and 1636 and ending in with the Great Plague of London in 1665". See also http://urbanrim.org.uk/plague%20list.htm). Important outbreaks of the Black Plague in Bury St. Edmunds, with up to 4-5 deaths/day, were in August 1544-April 1545, November 1557-May 1559, and May-December 1637. It is possible that Walter emigrated to the colonies to escape the relatively common outbreaks, especially the 1637 outbreak.

From the book Walter Allen of Newbury, Mass (Bent):

"Walter Allen was in Newbury, Mass., in 1640 and possibly before (the town was incorporated in 1635), but moved to Watertown about 1652. In 1665 he sold his estate in the latter town and bought sixty acres near the Concord boundary in what was then called Watertown Farms, afterward the town of Weston. In 1669 he purchased 200 acres more in Watertown Farms. About 1673 he moved to Charlestown, where he died July 8, 1681, age 80. He took oath in 1677 that he was 76, so he must have been born about 1601. At his death, he not only owned land in Watertown and Charlestown, but in Sudbury and Haverhill. The latter farm came into his possession in 1673 in payment of a debt due from Thomas Davis.

"Walter Allen's occupation is variously given in the old records as "farmour, " planter, haberdasher, shop-keeper, and once (1673) more specifically as a "Haberdasher of Hatts." The inventory of his estate amounts to 3015 pounds, a goodly sum for those days. When he came to Waterton he had a wife Rebecca, who died ______, and he married in Charlestown, Nov 29, 1678, Abegail Rogers.

Children of Walter and Rebecca, the first four born in England, Joseph in England or MA, the other two in Newbury:
1. Elnathan bapt. May 18, 1628
2. Anna bapt. Sep 24, 1630
3. John
4. Daniel bapt. Mar 30, 1635
5. Joseph

He married, first, Rebecca -----; and, second, Abigail Rogers Nov. 29, 1678, in Charlestown. He died in Charlestown July 8, 1681, aged eighty.'

4. Ancestral File, Ancestral File Number: 9362-TP. The Ancestral File indicates he was the son of Samuel Allen of Branton, Devon, England. However, it appears that his birth place and parents are unknown. He has been stated as coming from Somerset, Essex, and from Hampshire, as well as from Devon.

Edited out the duplicated “overview” and locked it so it can’t happen again. As always, can be unlocked by any curator on request.

I was just thinking of you, actually. I found a surviving child of Rev. Thomas Allen, of Norwich & Charlestown - Mary Allen. I presume however that she returned to England with her father in 1651 or so.

Thanks for cleaning up the overview for Walter Allen.

Discussion of John Harvard, mention of wife "believed to have been the daughter of Mr. Sadler of Patchham Sussex England", who married 1639 Thomas Allen, "who dismissed from the Boston church 'at their desire and his own,' next year became colleague of Rev. Zachary Symmes at Charlestown, returning to his native city of Norwich in 1650." [The New England Historic and Genealogical Register, Boston, MA, v. 25, p. 222, see also NEHGR, v. 39, p. 284].

Some other data on Rev. Thomas Allen & his (possible) daughter Mary Allen:

1638. Rev'd Mr. Tho's Allen, minister of Norwich, arrived at Charlestown 1638, & staid there till about 1651, and then returned to Norwich where he continued till 1662, when he was ejected for non Conformity and died Sept. 21 (original: 24!), 1673, aged 65 [Records of the First Church in Charlestown, Massachusetts, 1632-1789, by James Frothingham Hunnewell, David Clapp and Son, Boston, 1880, p. 165].

Parish, St. George Tombland & St. Simon & St Jude, Norfolk, Norfolk Co., England, Mr. Thomas Allen buried September 24 1673 [original from Findmypast].

Marriage of Mary Allen (possible?)

Parish, St. Giles, Norwich (Original parish, Swadington, Norfolke), Norfolk Co., England, mar. Jeremiah Lawes (of Swadington, Norfolk) & Mary Allen, 22 Oct 1655 [Findmypast]

Parish, St. Michael At Plea, Norwich, Norfolk Co., England, mar. John Leverington & Mary Allen, 12 Mar 1656 [Findmypast].

Parish, St. Andrew, Norwich, Norfolk Co., England, mar. John Gooson & Mary Allen, 29 Jun 1668 [Findmypast].

The 1668 Marriage seems a bit late?

Neat that it’s looking like she survived.

I uploaded the probated will of Mary Sadler, trying to identify everyone listed.

https://www.geni.com/documents/view?doc_id=6000000108715843836&

I assumed that if Marry was married, it would have been about 20 years after her birth in 1639 (i.e. 1659). Since Thomas lived and died in Norwich, Norwich Co., I also assumed that Mary would also have been married in Norwich. That resulted in three options, 1655, 1656 & 1668. None of the records show a parent, so I am now looking for a will for Thomas. But no luck so far. Since he was non-conformist, it is very possible that Thomas would not have a will in the Church of England records.

The will of Mary Sadler looks good: "I give unto my daughter Ann Allin and to her daughter Mary one shilling", dated 16 Jan 1645, probate 13 Nov 1647, Mayfield, Sussex, England, administration to daughter Elizabeth James.

Individuals mentioned in will of Mary Sadler of Mayfield, County of Sussex, England:
to daughter Elizabeth James, and administrator
to grandchild Mary Russell
to grandson Thomas Russell
to son John Sadler(?)the land which I have in (?) William Wishilberernce(??)
to grandchild Mary James
to Anne James
to Elizabeth James my grandchildren
to son Russell children not before named
to my daughter Mary Sadler & to each of her children which I suppose to live in New England
to my daughter Ann Allin & to her daughter Mary
witness John Kirken

It’s this line making me especially crazy:

“to my daughter Mary Sadler & to each of her children which I suppose to live in New England ...”

Who IS that? I’m thinking a daughter in law - her only other Sadler child was John Sadler, M.A. who apparently died without issue, after foretelling the Great Fire of London.

Mary (Shelley) Fenner then Sadler may well have been loaded with property & business (iron works) interests. Perhaps there’s an IPM.

Anyway, I don’t see any Sadler families in New England in 1645 that seem to fit the Will.

Might it be this?

Vowles/?Fowles, Richards & Mary (Sadler) [1628-]; b. 1647 (mar by 1647); ?Fairfield, CT/Rye, NY [New England Marriages Prior to 1700, by Clarence A. Torry, Genealogical Publishing Co.; Baltimore, MD, 2004, p. 768].

Great, I will look for that.

I misspoke about John Sadler (who married Jane Trenchard) not having issue. He had 14, including an amateur genealogist: Thomas Sadler

Apparently the Sadler fortune (which by this point was Trenchard & perhaps Shelley fortune) was lost in the Great Fire.

Mary Vowles - a very different Sadler family.

A nice study about her father here:

https://books.google.com/books?id=9enL-TAq_p8C&lpg=PA197&dq...

Oh well, not the Mary Sadler that we want. Notice that Richard Vowles was one of the planters of Rye, now part of White Plains, NY. Another of the planters was a Samuel Alling, who I suspect is Samuel Allen son of George Allen of Sandwich. Richard and Samuel were also present in Fairfield, CT.

Maybe it’s time for me to try the (Fenner) daughters listed by Mary Sadler the widow.

I think part of what’s interesting me about this area is the intersection between landed gentry, dissenting ministers, and our first arrivers. They followed the congregation... John Sadler of Wethersfield for instance seems to have been a follower of Rev Blinman.
