I grew up hearing from my dad that his last name Cochran was changed to Cochran because of the ancestor being a out law or something going on like that. The name Cochran was a name that a lot of people had in the area that ancestor was in at the time and he had to change it quickly, so he picked that one. He said that know one knows what the last name was. My dad said he heard that maybe it was change in Pickins County , GA. I looked and not knowing who to look for, I'm lost at how to find the original name. My dad said that no on has found it out. He also said that back then people did that a lot. I haven't tried looking recently cause, I just don't know how and where else to look. That's the story that I herd has a kid. Anyone have any ideas?

P.S.
My dad's side has the Cochran name has far back has 1800s.
