Is there any "proof" of this horrid betrayal that Etienne was accused of? Other than accusations made by a man who convinced Champlain that Etienne was bad for his own gain?

After everything Etienne did for Champlain - he chose to believe a concocted story, banish Etienne, mark him a traitor, and force him to live with the natives (or be hung) never to be able to return to his homeland.

Something is amiss

Darlene Brule, I'd take a look at the Wikipedia article on Étienne.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/%C3%89tienne_Br%C3%BBl%C3%A9

The article has notes and references at the bottom that should provide more historical information on Étienne Brûlé.

I have read that article - have a look at the Canadian Museum of Civilization

special note under Betrayal - Gabriel Sagard - wonder what his game was?

he is a hero he is a traitor he is our ennemy and best friend.

I have read an article in the past few years that talks about Etienne's marriage when he returned to France - and the son he had - who eventually came to Canada to continue in his fathers foot steps - does anyone know of this article? I cannot seem to find it
