origin
The name Sweeney is an anglicised version of the Gaelic surname MacSuibhne, meaning "Son of Suibhne", Suibhne meaning "pleasant". There is evidence to suggest that the name originated in present day Scotland and came to Ireland with an influx of "Gallowglasses" or paid mercenaries in the employ of the last princes of TirConnell - approximately centred on present day County Donegal. Scattered after the last great battle to be fought between the Irish princes, O'Donnell and O'Neill, and English forces in Kinsale, County Cork in the 1601, the name is now most numerous in Counties Cork and Kerry, though some can be found along the entire western seaboard of Ireland as the attempted to make their way home to their northern home.
