The Schiff family is of Austrian origin.
Leopold Schiff married Johanna, and gave birth to Carl Gottlieb Samuele Schiff (1838-1905). They lived in the USA.
Carl Schiff married Mary Ballard Burch (1861-1922). They had many children. Around the time of the First World War, German-sounding names were unpopular, so the family changed its name to Schiff-Burch, then Burch Schiiff, then Burch, dropping Schiff entirely within a couple of generations.
