note regarding family members in Middle Tennessee, United States
From Private User: My grandfather, Hugh Alexander Quarles, was born in the Greenvale community of Wilson County, Tennessee. Earlier this year I decided to visit Greenvale. It is currently a very very small community of several widely spaced homes with no commerce and one church. After knocking on the door of one of the homes, I quickly learned that "Quarles" is pronounced "Qualls" in that community. I was also given good directions to the community cemetery where many Quarles citizens were buried. The next day at the county archives I learned that in the county seat "Quarles" is pronounced both "Quarles" and "Qualls." That helps to explains the number of "Qualls" spellings that show up in census records and other records.
