About Tpr. Alexander Henry Bowie
Alexander Henry Bowie was born at Hackney in the Greater London area of England on 29 January 1887. His parents were William Bowie and Agnes Emily Bowie (née Sanders) who had married at Islington in London in 1871. His father William died at Clapton in Greater London on 13 September 1911, and at some stage Alexander and his brother William Sanders Bowie emigrated to New Zealand. During World War I, Alexander served with the Auckland Mounted Rifles. He was wounded at Gallipoli and evacuated to Greece. Alexander died of his wounds on 8 September 1915 at Mudros West in Lemnos. 28-year-old Alexander was buried in the Portianos Military Cemetery [IV. C. 254.]. His mother Agnes died at Glossop in Derbyshire on 22 June 1930, and his brother William at Kerikeri in Northland, New Zealand, on 15 July 1972. Bio by Debbie McCauley (8 August 2024).
