About (Tom) Thomas Struan Robertson
Otago Daily Times , Issue 10485, 8 October 1895, Page 2 Mr Thomas Robertson, another of the old identities, died on Saturday at his residence, Anderson's Bay. at the advanced age of 98 years. Born in Haddingtonshire, Scotland, in 1793, he learned the trade of bricklayor and mason. He decided to come to Otago as one of the pioneers of the settlement, and embarked with his wife and family on the Philip Laing in 1848. He secured work as soon as he arrived in building chimneys for the late Mr Kettle, who had laid of the land prior to the .arrival of the settlers. By his industry Mr Robertson was able to take up land at Tomahawk, to which he added as means permitted, and as the district, progressed his industry was rewarded, and he found himself in fairly comfortable, circumstances. A disposition of his property, which he made was followed by an expensive lawsuit, and Mr Robertson had to rely once more on what he coald produce from his farm. He was married three times, and,singularly enough, he died a widower, leaving numerous descendants.
Thomas's three wives were - 1. Janet Peat who died in Scotland. The couple had 7 children, Thomas, James, Janet, Elizabeth, Margaret, Agnes, Euphemia.
2. Elizabeth Walls. The couple had 2 children, Ann and Jane.
