Thomas Andrews

Thomas Andrews, from a textile family in St. Martins on Ludgate, England, came to James City via payment by George McMinifie. McMinifie's land patent for the transport of 24 weavers/textile workers is recorded on July 2, 1636. Thomas married Dorothy in England and her registry to Virginia is in 1637. Their children per his will and other filed documents were: Thomas, Robert, Bartholomew, David, Anne (ROWLAND) and Sarah (Digby) The plantation, Kilcany, was in Surry and later Sussex, County VA. The family remained in textiles (though at times covertly). Thomas willed his tools to Thomas II and then to John Andrews (aka John the Wheelwright) John left the texile business to his son Richard and daughter Jean, per the terms of that man's will. Thomas Andrews, son of Robert, was the Andrews who became one of the first Indian agents in the Carolinas. His people went on into Louisiana. Bartholomew, cousin of above Thomas was also called Andrus - many of them were so called in public record.

Thomas Andrews came to the Colonies between 1645 and 1648. He evidently came alone as the first records we find, he only is listed. In the book on Surry County, VA he is listed in the "Records from 1645-1648" section pg. 456-457. A certificate was granted to Thomas Chapman for 1200 acres for importing Thomas Andrews, and 23 others. (This family did not become "Andrus" until the move to Louisiana) There were 21 men and 3 women. Colonists were granted land for sponsoring newcomers. The colony that Thomas came to was in the same vicinity as the first colony, Jamestown. It was situated on the South side of the James River and east of the Blue Ridge Mountains. To this day proud Virginians of this area call themselves, "Southsiders".

The next record in which Thomas is found he has taken a wife. In the will of George Jordon it is worded, "to Thomas Andrews and his wife Dorothy I bequeath 500lb. of tobacco." In the book Colonial Surry, the section CENSUS OF TITHABLES IN SURRY COUNTY, VIRGINIA, has Thomas listed under WHITE in 1668. A person was expected to "tythe" or pay taxes on his family and slaves or bond servants 16 years and older. Some headings on lists gave the number of crow heads, squirrel scalps, or wolf scalps produced by the taxpayers. "It is assumed by some these were listed to obtain a bonus or credit upon taxes, however it's more likely that the taxpayer should kill and destroy a given number of these pests, in proportion to his number of tythables, and failing to do so, should be liable to a penalty or additional taxes for such failure"(Sunlight on the Southside by Landon C. Bell) By the time of the next census in 1678 Thomas' two sons are listed as tithe payers. At this time Thomas is 71 years old and this is the last we see him in the census of taxpayers.
