About Sir Phillip Orreby
Sir Philip de Orreby, Knt., b. c 1160, d. c 1230, Justiciar of Chester 1208-1229, Constable to Gilbert de Gant, Earl of Lincoln. [Ancestral Roots]
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
SIR PHILIP DE ORREBY (presumably son of Herbert son of Alard, otherwise Herbert de Orreby (b)), born probably circa 1160 (c), appears to have entered the service of the Earls of Chester at an early age, and to have been in constant attendance upon Earl Ranulph after his succession as Earl. He was justiciar of Chester in 1207, or earlier, till his resignation of the office in 1229. He married, 1stly, Emma, daughter of Margery DE COVENTRE, whom the Earl, as her guardian, gave him in marriage. He married, 2ndly, Alice DE BAUMVILLE. He died circa 1230, dower being allowed to his widow Alice by her son Fulk de Orreby. [Complete Peerage X:168-9, (transcribed by Dave Utzinger)]
(c) Proof has not been found that Philip was one of the younger sons--probably the 2nd--of Herbert, son of Alard, by Agnes his wife, daughter of Simon FitzWilliam (of Kyme), named probably after her brother Philip de Kyme, but there is a strong presumption that it was the fact.
