NIGEL DE HODELSTON, who gave to the abbey of Selby two carrucates of land and a half in Millum, and part of his tythe in Hodelston with the soccage, &c. Witnesses, THOMAS, Archbishop of York; WILLIAM, the Deane; and WILLIAM, Treasurer, This Nigel had two sons, viz.

SIR JOHN DE HODELSTON, Lord d'Anys, was summoned to a council at Newcastle-upon-Tyne, and ordered, on the 26th September, in the 26th of EDWARD I. to attend the king at Carlisle with horse and arms, in the record of which he is styled a baron (see Appendiz tothe Peerage Report). he was also one of the great council, wo subscribed in 1301, the celebrated letter to Pope Boniface VIII. declaring "that their king was not to answer in judgment, for any rights of the crown of England, before any tribunal under heaven, &c. and that by the help of God they would resolutely, and with all their force, maintain against all

men." To this important document were affixed the hands and seals of arms of 104 of the earls and barons, amongst whom JOHN DE HODELSTON was the 89th. Sir John assisted at the celebrated siege of Karlaverock, anno 1300, in the train of the Earl of Lincoln. he m. temp. HENRY III. JOAN, daughter and sole heiress of ADAM DE BOIVIL, Lord of Millum,* in Cumberland, and had four sons, RICHARD, his heir, Adam, John, and Robert. Sir John Hodelston claimed free chase between the waters of Eske and Dudene, also Infangenthef in Millum, Seton, Booth, Kirkstanton, &c. He was s. by his eldest son,

SIR JOHN HODLESTON, knt. Lord of Millum, who had permission to hold a market on every Wednesday at his manor of Bothill, in the county of Cumberland, and for a fair to be holden in the same place four days in the evening, and on the day of the exaltation of the Holy Cross, and the two days following; witnessed by William Talbot, steward of the King's Palace at Westminster, 24th October, 21st EDWARD III. Sir John Hodleston was one of the collectors of the tenth and fifteenth granted by the laity of Cumberland to the king, and he obtained, according to Lysons, license in 1335 to embattle his mansion at Millum. This gentleman enjoyed in a pre-eminent degree the confidence of his royal mistress, as evinced on the proclaiming of Lady Jane Grey, when her majesty repaired privately to Salston, and that she might the better disguise herself rid behind Sir John's servant to Framlingham Castle. "Besides other great boones," saith Fuller, " Queen MARY bestowed the bigger part of Cambridge castle, then much ruined, upon him, with the stones, whereof he built his fair house in this county." Whilst the house at Salston was erecting, Sir Edmund resided on his estates in Essex, and served the office of Sheriff for that county in the 20th, 21st, and 30th of ELIZABETH. He died at his sister's, Lady Lovel, in the 5th of JAMES I. and was succeeded by his son,

SIR ROBERT HODELSTON, of Salston, gamekeeper to King CHARLES i. at Newmarket, who m. first the Honorable Mary Roper, daughter of Christopher, Lord Teynham, by whom he had a son HENRY, who pre-deceased him unmarried. Sir Robert wedded secondly, Mary, daughter of Richard Tufton, esq. and niece of Nicholas, Earl of Thanet, but had no issue. His brother,
HENRY HODELSTON, esq. lieutenant-colonel in the service of King CHARLES I., m. Mary, daughter of William Havers, esq. of Thelton Hall, in Norfolk (see vol. i. p. 382), and dying in 1659, was s. by his son,
