About Pte. Joseph Andrew Cairney

Son of John and Margaret Cairney (née Smyth) of Howick, Auckland. They were married in Auchinlech, Scotland, on 6 July 1877. Brother of Harold Austin Cairney who also served with 1st and 2nd NZEF (he died Military Annexe, Auckland Hospital, 3 April 1940). Died at the No. 10 Canadian Casualty Clearing Station in Belgium from wounds accidentally received in the field. Joseph is also remembered in Our Lady Star of the Sea Parish Cemetery in Howick, Auckland, New Zealand, on the Howick and Pakuranga War Memorial and the Howick Roll of Honour.
