Biography

James was born ca. 1758 near Appomatox Courthouse, VA. James Campbell ... He passed away in 1826. James Campbell, son of Archibald Campbell and Elizabeth Baker. James enlisted in the 10th Virginia Regiment as a private in Capt. Clough Shelton's Company of Foot Dec 2, 1776. He served three years, his time expiring at Morristown NJ in 1779. He was a wagoner and National Archive records show him at Valley Forge, Brunswick, Camp Middlebrook, Smith's Clove, Ramapoo and Camp Haverstram. He was reported sick at Yellow Springs in August 1778 and sick at New Winsor NJ in October and November of 1778. James married Jane Means, daughter of Robert and Betsy Robinson Means, in Campbell County VA 1784.
