About Peterke Jans

Baptist lists “Tys Barentsz, from Leerdam, wife and three children, 15, 10 and 11/4 years old.” In the First Settlement of New York by the Dutch, he is listed as “Tys Barentsen”. The 15 year old is believed to be Barent (or Barnt). The ten year old is believed to be either Cornelius or Beleyte. These were children by Thys’ first wife Peterke Jans (b ~ Dec 1624). The youngest child is believed to be Anthony produced by Thys’ marriage in ~ 1659 to Scytie Cornelius who migrated with Thys to the colonies.

Family

The surname “Swaim” was not used until later on.

Thys Barentsen married 1st by 1644 at Leerdam, South Holland, Netherlands to Peterke Jans, (b 1624 - died around June, 1654), daughter of Jan Alberts and Beletje Pieters.

Mathijs and Peterke had at least 6 children but only two – Barent and Belytje – survived childhood. They were born at Leerdam, South Holland, Netherlands, and were:

  1. Barent Tysen alias Sweem (bp Dec 1644, d 1720). Married 1) Maria Kroesen 2) Magdalena Jans Morgan
  2. Sibilla Tysen (twin) (b Aug 1647 - ?) Died young.
  3. Belytie Tysen (twin) (b Aug 1647 - ?) Died young.
  4. Belytie Tysen (2nd of the name) (b Jun 1649 - ?). Died young.
  5. Belytie Tysen 3rd of the name) (bp Jul 1650 - ? ) It is believed that Belytje was the 10 year old referenced on the 1661 voyage passenger list. It is also believed that she was the only daughter of Thys Barentsen’s first marriage to Peterke Jans to survive. Belytje married Willem Janse Loserecht (b 1642) who was a son of Jan Willemszen Van der Loosdrecht. Willem came over from Holland in 1661 on the same journey with Thys Barentsen and his daughter Belytje. Willem was said to have assumed the surname Johnson.
  6. Peterke Tysen (b 15 Mar 1653 - ?). Died young.
