Ninian Stewart13 (James12, Archibald11, Ninian10) came into possession of his father's estate in Ballintoy some time before 1600. He had a large family but only three children grew to maturity:

  • Archibald, born in 1593 [in a deposition May 18, 1643, he stated he was about 50]
  • Catherine; married John Stewart of Red Bay, possibly some relation
  • Ninian, married Jane McCullough [his family is given following Archibald]

Ninian Stewart, Laird of Ballentoy Castle was born circa 1582 at Ballintoy Castle, Cairn, Antrim, Ireland.1 He married Grissel Stewart, daughter of Sir James Stewart, Sheriff of Bute and Jean Blair, circa 1613 at Isle of Bute, Argyll, Scotland.1 Ninian Stewart, Laird of Ballentoy Castle died in 1669 at Cairn, Antrim, Ireland.1

Pethrick McCurdy married Margaret Stewart, a descendant of King Robert II of Scotland, also from Somerled mentioned in this history. Her father, Charles Stewart of Ballintoy, Ireland was the son of Ninian Stewart of Kilchattan and his wife Grizel; he was the son of Sir James Stewart, whose father was Sir Ninian of Nether Kilmory in 1532; his father was Sir Ninian who was born in 1469 and succeeded his father as Sheriff of Bute; he was made Castellan of Rothsay by James IV. Sir James was the son of Sir John Stewart who was born in 1360 and died in 1449; he was Sheriff of Bute; he married Janet Semple of Eliotstown. Sir John was the son of King Robert II.

In the absence of positive evidence as to the precise time of their arrival, we would hedisposed to fix the year 1560, as this date corresponds with the period when the family lost their estates in Bute, and also with the circumstances of their subsequent history in this country. The first settler (his Christian name is doubtful, but is supposed to have been James) left two sons, Ninian and David, and two daughters, Jane and Christain. Ninian the elder was the father of a large family, but only three of his children, namely, Archibald, Ninian, and Cathrine, lived to mature age. These successions, however, occurred previously to the year 1600, so that the family must have been settled on this coast at least as early as 1560. .."
