Nathaniel Ely, Cambridge, 1632; freeman, Mass., May 6, 1635; an original proprietor at Hartford ; his house-lot was next north of Edward Elmer, where Music Hall now stands; constable, 1640; townsman, 1644, 1650 ; one of the signers of the agreement for planting Norwalk, June 19, 1650, and probably removed there soon after; be sold land to John Talcott, Sept., 1650, and to Richard Butler, 1652. He was deputy from Norwalk, 1657 ; removed to Springfield in 1660, where he d. Dec. 25, 1675. His widow, Martha, d. Oct. 23, 1688.

Life before Springfield with reference to the Ely Genealogy. 1634 Nathaniel came to Ipswich, England & arrived in Boston First settled in Cambridge 1635 Nathaniel made a freeman 1636 June-went with Rev. Thomas Hooker from Cambridge to Hartford 1639 Hartford, CT-made Constable 1643 Hartford, CT-Selectman 1649 Hartford, CT-Selectman 1649 Granted removal to Norwalk (with Richard Olmstead petitioned the General Court for leave to make a settlement in Norwalk) 1650 Removed to Norwalk, CT 1659 Sold his interest in lands in Norwalk and went to Springfield. Life in Springfield 1660 Arrived Springfield, MA-admitted as inhabitants with his son, Samuel. 1662 Chosen Selectman, held office 5 years. 1675 Dec 25 Nathaniel Ely died in Springfield, MA 1683 Oct 23 his widow October 23, 1683.
Occupation He was keeper of the "ordinary" and was licensed "to that work as also for selling wines and strong liquors, for ye year ensuing, Provided he keep good rule and order in his house." He continued to keep the "orderinary" up to his death in 1675. He was before the courts for violating the law once for "selling four quarts of cider to the Indians," and in 1674 he was presented "for not keeping beer in his house according to law, after the rate of 4 bushels of good barley malt to ye hhd, and further he said he would not be turned out of his way; whereupon ye Court fyned him 40s for ye use of the County, all persons also judging this beere farr below that rule in ye law." He said of late he had kept only table beer, but could not say it was according to law.
