Antone was Papago (Tohono Oʼodham)
Curator Note: The Tohono O'odham, also known as the Papago, are a Native American tribe that traditionally lived in the Sonoran desert in southern Arizona and northern Mexico. The Tohono Oʼodham tribal government and most of the people have rejected the historical name Papago used by European colonizers. They call themselves Tohono Oʼodham, meaning "desert people".
Research Notes:
-Antone (the only name he was known by) was committed to the Canton Asylum July 29, 1905 with a diagnosis of Chronic Dementia, revised to dementia praecox, hebephrenia in 1910. (Assummed surname to be Antone based on another patient also Papago with the name Antone, Milsie)
-He was presumably committed by the Sells Agency in Arizona presumed therefore to have been born in Arizona.
-He died of pulmonary tuberculosis
-Antone was buried in the asylum cemetery row 4 plot 28, the 40th person to die since the asylum opened in January 1903. The 1912 South Dakota Grave Registration records indicate he may have been reburied to Presho, Lyman County, South Dakota, United States
-Attended the Sacaton Indian School, dates ?
His profile is part of the The Canton Asylum One Place Study.
