About N.N. de Brionne, Niece of Gilbert de Brionne (not daughter)
Note by George J. Homs (16/8/2013): The wife of Balderic Teutonicus is said (according to Orderic Vitalis) to be a niece of Gilbert de Brionne. However, she is also said to be the daughter of Gilbert's son Richard de Brionne by his wife Rohèse Giffard. Because of these contradictions, some critics believe that Orderic Vitalis made a mistake and should have said that Balderic's wife was the granddaughter of Gilbert de Brionne (and not his niece). However, this doesn't work at all from a chronological view. The Foundation of Medieval Genealogy seems to leave the possibility open that Orderic Vitalis was right, and that Gilbert de Brionne had a brother, who was the father of Balderic's wife.
