Fatimah bint Asad (c.68 BH – 4 AH ; c.555–626 CE) (Arabic: فاطمة بنت أسد, Fāṭimah bint ʾAsad) was the mother of Ali bin Abi Talib, the fourth caliph of Islam. She was the daughter of Asad ibn Hashim and Fatimah bint Qays, hence a member of the Hashim clan of the Quraysh.[1]
She married her cousin, Abu Talib ibn Abd al-Muttalib, and was the mother of seven of his children. Talib. Fakhitah (Umm Hani). Aqeel. Jumanah. Ja'far. Rayta. Ali, who was the husband of Muhammad's daughter Fatimah.[2] The orphaned Muhammad, who was Abu Talib's nephew and Fatimah's cousin, came to live in their house in 579 (when he was eight).[3][4] Fatimah became a Muslim and is described as a "righteous woman".[5] Following Abu Talib's death in 620,[6][7] Fatimah emigrated to Medina with her son Ali in 622.[8] Muhammad used to visit her and take siestas in her house there.[9] She died in the year 625/626.[10] According to Anas bin Malik, when Muhammad learned that Fatimah had died, he went to her house to sit beside her body and pray for her,[citation needed] gave his shirt to be incorporated into her shroud, and personally placed her in her grave in the Jannatul Baqee cemetery in Medina.[11]
