About Matilda de Valoignes
~Boyer's Medieval English ancestors of Robert Abell, p. 47, married to Maud de Valoignes, daughter and coheiress of Theobald de Valoignes, here sister was the wife of Ranulph de Glandwille, a great justicaiar.
~The Normand People and Their Existing Descendants . . ., p. 53, Herveius Walter, father of Theobald, during the reign of Henry II (1154-1189), was a considerable benefactor to Butley Priory in Suffolk. [Mon. Angl. ii. p. 245]
Walter married Maud, eldest daughter of Theobald de Valois. Their children were:
- Theobald who married Maud, daughter of Robert le Vavasor. Their child was Theobald who married Maud, sister of Thomas A. Becket. He was sheriff of Lancashire 1195 59 1199. In 1177, he was made Chief Butler of Ireland by Henry II, when he assumed the official surname Pincerna. In 1221, he first assumed the name of Boteler, or Butler, and from him descended the Butlers, Earls of Ormand.
