Biography of Marie d’Abancourt
Marie D'Abancourt born about 1617 in France first marries Jean Jolliet a charretier in the service of the Compagnie des Cent-Associés (note: an Association which in 1627 was granted ownership and legal and seigneurial rights over New France and also obtained the rights to allocate the land as fiefs and seigneuries to its best advantage usually to the most influential colonists). They had a son Louis baptisted 21 September 1645. On the 23 April 1651 at age five Louis loses his father Jean. His mother Marie marries a second time 19 October 1651 to Gefory Guillot. Gefory dies due to drowning the summer of 1655. Louis grows up to explore and discover the Mississippi to become a cartographer (map maker), hydrographer (river mapping) for the King, professor at the Jésuites à Québec college, organist, business person, and seigneur (feudal lord). Marie marries a third time 8 November 1665 to Martin Prévost. Marie dies about 1700 in New France at the age of 83.
