Robert Caron and his descendants
On June 4, 1634, Robert Caron arrived in New France. He disembarked from one of the four ships that belonged to the Cheffault-Rozee Company, based in Rouen. According to the Intendant, Jean Talon, he traveled with Zacharie Cloutier, carpenter, Robert Giffard, doctor, Noël Langlois, Charles L’Allemant, Jesuit, Jean Bourdon, engineer, and, of course, many others.
After completing two years with the Company, he opted not to renew his contract and decided to set down roots in the colony. From Pierre Le Gardeur de Repentigny, he obtained a concession at Longue-Pointe, near Sault Montmorency, which he started to clear immediately. The following year, on October 25, 1637, he married Marie Crevet a young 16-year-old girl from Normandy, the daughter of Pierre Crevet and Marguerite Lemercier, of Bénouville, near Caen. Seven children were born from that union: Marie, Jean-Baptiste, Robert, Catherine, Joseph, Pierre and Aymée.
Since the Iroquois constantly harassed the colonists, Robert decided to leave his land in Longue-Pointe, which he later sold to Guillaume Couillard, and moved to Côteau Sainte-Geneviève. There, he undertook to clear this new concession and a few years later he was given ownership of the property. In 1654, he once again sold his property and moved to Côte de Beaupré, approximately 1 kilometer to the east of the current Basilique Sainte-Anne, in Beaupré. Today, the descendants of Mr. Thomas Simard live in the house erected on the foundations of Robert Caron’s home, which was destroyed by fire.
Robert died prematurely in 1656, at the Hôtel-Dieu in Quebec City, at the age of 44. The causes of his death remain relatively obscure. Did he die as a result of an injury suffered in combat with the Amerindians? After Robert died, Marie Crevet moved to Château-Richer. After remaining a widow for ten years, she married Noël Langlois, the widower of Françoise Garnier, who had arrived on the same ship as Robert in 1634. He died in 1684, at the age of 80. Following that, Marie Crevet lived in Baie St-Paul where she died at the age of 85.
Robert and Marie founded one of the families with the most descendants in North America. Their descendants can be found in all of the provinces of Canada and in a large number of American states. There are more than 30,000 Carons listed in telephone books throughout North America. In Quebec, the Caron name is associated with more than 150 place names. These facts testify to the family’s sense of initiative and discovery.
The Association des Familles Caron d’Amérique was officially founded on May 26, 1984. It now has 750 members, including 425 who are members for life. The Association organizes an annual get-together, which is held at a different location each year. Its bulletin, which was named in keeping with the Associations’ motto, Tenir et servir (“Hold and Serve”), is published four times a year. It should be noted that the Association was the first family association to publish its genealogical data on the site of the Centre de généalogie francophone d’Amérique, which can be consulted at: http://www.genealogie.org/famille/caron/caron.htm
She remarried Noel Langlois 27 Jul 1666 at Chateau-Richer (ct 7 Jul Aubert). At the census of 1666, shea was at Beaupre and listed as being 45 years old. In 1667 she was at Beauport and listed as 50 years old. In 1681, she was still at Beauport and listed as 71 years old. She was supposedly 92 years old at the time of her death in 1695.

Marie CRENEL was from Bayeux, Normandy. At the age of 15, Marie Crenel (Crevet) signed a marriage contract to become one of the filles à marier, probably sponsored by Robert Giffard. In October of 1637, she married Robert Caron, so she must have arrived in Canada in the summer of 1637. In 1654, this family was established in the parish of Ste. Anne de Beaupré in the county of Montmorency. Robert Caron died in 1656.
Marie Crenel later married Noël Langlois in 1666 ten years after Robert Caron, had died. Noël Langlois is an ancestor in both the Camirand and Lizotte lines. This Caron family are ancestors in the Lizotte line.
The 1666 census lists the household of Robert Caron, which consisted of 3 sons: Robert, 19, Joseph, 14 and Pierre, 12, and a 10-year old daughter, Aimée. __________

A True Pioneer: Marie Crevet was born in 1621 at Benouville, Bayeux, Normandy, France; the daughter of Pierre Crevet and Marie Le Mercier. At the age of 15, she signed a marriage contract to become one of the Filles à Marier or “marriageable girls”; the first single women to set foot in New France since its return from the English in 1632.
Her intended was Robert Caron, an indentured tradesman of Robert Giffard, and it's safe to assume that the Siegneur of Beauport, also sponsored Marie's voyage.
Though she could have backed out when she met Robert, soon after landing in Quebec, he must have met with her approval and they were married on October 25, 1637; at Notre-Dame in Quebec. Not much is known of Robert Caron, other than the fact that he was born about 1615 at La Rochelle, son of Robert-Edouard Caron, and that he arrived in New France on June 11, 1636. Because of a fire, all of his records were destroyed.
The couple would have seven children before Robert's death on July 08, 1656; at the Hotel-Dieu Hospital in Quebec:
Marie Caron - Was born in 1638. She married Jean Picard and one daughter Louise. Sadly Marie was killed in an Iroquois (or, proper term, Haudenosaunee) Raid on June 10, 1660.
Jean-Baptiste Caron - Was born July 10, 1641 and died December 28, 1706. He married Marguerite Gagnon and the couple had eight children.
Aimee Caron - Was born in 1643 and died on October 4, 1685. She married Noel Langlois Jr.; son of her future stepfather Noel Langlois Sr. and Francois Garnier. They had five children.
Robert Caron Jr. - Was born on February 8, 1647 and died on April 29, 1714. He married Marguerite Cloutier and the couple had twelve children.
Catherine Caron - Was born on November 23, 1649 and died June 14, 1725. She married Jacques Dodier and the couple had six children.
Joseph Caron - Was born on March 16, 1652 and died May 5, 1711. He married Elisabeth Bernier and the couple had twelve children.
Pierre Caron - Was born on July 11, 1654 and died June 26, 1720. He married Marie-Michelle Bernier and the couple had eight children.
After Robert's death, Marie married Noël Langlois (father-in-law of her daughter Aimée) on July 27, 1666, and the couple had one daughter, Marie-Anne, who would grow up to marry Jean Cote. Marie died on November 22, 1695 and Noel July 14, 1684.
