Parents asserted here from Devon England seem doubtful. - Don Blish Feb 2018
Married to Eleanor Stuart. From the dates when his children were born, it is inferred that his marriage took place about 1655, and he may have been born about 1625 or 1630. From 3 land purchase records it appears that John Upton owned 180 acres of land lying in the southwest corner of what was long known as Salem Village (which is now part of West Peabody).
The homestead of John Upton at 735 Lowell Street in West Peabody (formerly Danvers) continued in the possession of his descendants into the late 1800s.
Within 6 years after settlement in Salem, he made several large purchases in North Reading (two purchases were for 270 acres of upland each). It appears he started living in North Reading prior to August 1678, but after 1671, when he was known to reside in Salem Village. John Upton continued to buy land and became a very large land holder. Today, there is a major road known as Upton Road in North Reading, MA, obviously named after John Upton.
They removed the old house and erected on the site the house now standing on the northeast side of Lowell and Birch Streets in West Peabody, MA. They divided the estate in 1708 and this house and land around it was assigned to William Upton. It was built with a pitched roof, having three gables. The length of the house is about 38 feet and total width is 32 feet. The rear part of the house about 10 feet in width was covered by a pitched roof with a gable to the north, its ridgepole running to that of the main part of the house. The roof was changed to its present form about the time of the revolution. The front rooms had been modernized by furring out the walls and ceilings, thus hiding the original timbers from view. The fireplace in the kitchen measured 7 feet and 3 inches in length and about 4 feet in height. The most interesting feature is the hearth, which is 8 and 1/2 feet in length and projects into the room 5 and 1/2 feet. It is laid with bricks set edgewise, and has been much worn by long use. It was converted to a tavern circa 1677 and remained in use as a tavern into the early 1900s. In the old tavern days, this kitchen must have been a busy place. William Upton converted the property to his son Paul in 1739. It left the possession of the Upton family in 1837. Information provided by Ken Tobin.

2. Submitted by Nelda Upton Gallerano – Neldagal@me.com on 17 July 2016: “I am the direct descendent of John Upton #27 at the Iron Works. All of my research shows he is English having been born in Newton Ferris to English parents. He and his descendants are well documented in the colonies. My question is: How did this young man come to fight and be captured with the Scots? Thank you for your time and devotion to this project. I have learned so much through your website.”
