John Hamilton of Broomhill, here treated, is misidentified as the son of David Hamilton of Broomhill in John Anderson's principal account of the family of Hamilton of Broomhill Hamilton Memoirs, p. 230 but the mistake is corrected by John Birnie of Broomhill's account of the family which was reproduced in Anderson's Supplement to the Memoirs. Hamilton Mempoirs, pp. 425-31 An alternative genealogy is proposed byThe Scots Peerage, which identifies John Hamilton of Broomhill, here treated, as a bastard son of James, first Lord Hamilton, but this is also wrong.The Scots Peerage, Vol. II, page 38
