Family: Abraham Finch and his wife, often seen as John Finch's parents, are considered to be built on a faulty record for his alleged brother Daniel. John and Daniel are not proven to be brothers.[1] See Daniel Finch for discussion of possible relationships with other colonial Finches.

Wife: No historic records have been found to confirm that John Finch's second wife Martha ever had the surname Brett. Anderson and Torrey both leave her surname blank.[1][2]

There is likely a relationship with Daniel “Ould” Finch but it is unclear what it is. The generations are different.

”Anderson admits the likelihood that Daniel and John Finch were related, but believes that Daniel was a generation older.”

Daniel Finch - both he and John first lived in Watertown, both moved to Stamford, (though Daniel lived in Wethersfield before moving to Stamford).[1] They were not father and son, apparent from Daniel's will.[1] They could have been brothers, although Daniel was almost a generation older than John.[1]

Samuel finch of Roxbury - has also been named as a brother of Daniel and/or John, but according to Anderson, this is less likely.[1]

Biography

John Finch was born in England by about 1595 based on an estimated date of marriage. His origin and parents are unknown.[1] There are sources which include John as a passenger in the Winthrop Fleet, however scholarly confirmation is needed.

Family

John was first married by 1620 to an unknown woman, probably in England. The couple had one known child.[1]

He married for a second time in about 1635 (assuming she was mother of the other four children), to Martha (birth surname unknown).[1]

After John's death in 1657, Martha Finch married in September 1658, John Green.[3]

He married (1) ELIZABETH ANN BASSETT on 08 Oct 1658 in Stamford, CT, daughter of John Bassett and Margery B. She was born about 1638 in New Haven, Ct. She died in 1677 in Stamford, CT. He married (2) HANNAH WEBB. She was born about 1635. She died on 09 Nov 1703.
• 8. iii. SAMUEL FINCH was born in 1638 in Stamford, CT. He died on 23 Apr 1698 in Stamford, Fairfield, CT. He married SARAH HOYT in 1656. She was born about 1639 in Stamford, Fairfield, CT. She died on 19 Mar 1712 in Stamford, Fairfield, CT.
• 9. iv. JOSEPH FINCH was born on 23 Nov 1640 in Stamford, CT. He died on 12 Mar 1714 in Greenwich, CT. He married (1) ELIZABETH AUSTIN on 23 Nov 1670 in Stamford, CT, daughter of John Austin and Catherine. He married (2) RUTH HARDY.
