Jane Troutbeck was born in 1459 at Dunham-on-the-Hill, Cheshire, England.[1][2][3]

She was the daughter of Sir William Troutbeck of Dunham-on-the-Hill, Cheshire, and his wife Margaret Stanley, daughter of Sir Thomas Stanley KG and Joan Goushill.

Marriage & Children

She married (1st) Sir William Boteler, son of Sir John Boteler of Bewsey and Margaret Gerard of Bryn. They had no issue.

She married (2nd) Sir William Griffith (sr) of Penrhyn. They had one son and three daughters.

Joan Troutbeck (born 1459) married (1494) Gwilym Griffith (1445-1505/6). Later he married Elizabeth Grey. Gwilym Griffith descended from Owain Gwynedd (grandfather of Llywelyn the Great (Welsh King). Joan Troutbeck connects the Merovingian Line.

William Griffith (ca.1445-1505/6). He is not always easy to distinguish in the documents from his father. He married firstly Joan Troutbeck, widow of Sir William Butler of Bewsey, Cheshire, whose mother was Margaret, daughter of Sir Thomas Stanley, first Baron Stanley.

Notes: The Griffiths of Penrhyn were one of the most powerful families in North Wales at the time and were a branch of the Tudor family descended from Ednyfed Fychan (d. 1246) and the Welsh royal and princely houses. The half-sister of Sir William (according to some pedigrees, but possibly his daughter), Agnes Griffith (d. 1542), married Sir Roland de Velville.

Joan and her 1st husband were step-siblings, since Joan's mother Margaret Stanley had at one stage been married to her husband's father Sir John Boteler (her 2nd cousin). The child of that marriage, Sir Thomas Boteler, was therefore half-brother to both Joan and her husband.

Joan's brother Adam Troutbeck married her husband's sister Margaret Boteler (also without issue). Of course that couple were also step-siblings, and half-brothers of Sir Thomas. Joan Troutbeck and Margaret Boteler were double sisters-in-law; Adam Troutbeck and William Boteler were double brothers-in-law.

Did Joan's brother Sir William Troutbeck marry another sister, Jane Boteler?

Imports suggest that Jane was born at Prynes Castle, Cheshire and married 1480 at Llandygai, Caernarvonshire. [citation needed]

It is through the Griffiths of Penrhyn that the line of the Merovingian Line is joined at Gwilym Griffith and Jane Troutbeck below.
