John Bertrand was a Virginia colonist.
Rev. Jean (John) Bertrand [1]
John Bertrand, possible son of Jean Bertrand and Marguerite Robert, was born about 1660 in France. (Parents uncertain, need confirmation.)
John, his future wife Charlotte Dejolie and John's brother Paul Bertrand fled France as Huguenots during the persecution of Lewis XIV following his revocation of the Edict of Nantes in 1685. They went first to London, England, where John and Charlotte were married and thence to the British Colonies in America. John and Charlotte settled first about 1692[2] in Old Rappahannock County, Virginia (formed from Lancaster County in 1656). John's brother Paul Bertrand settled in Calvert County, Maryland, west of Patuxant River. Paul died soon after his marriage leaving a widow and one son Paul who returned to England.[3]
John Bertrand, fled from France as a Huguenot under Louis XIV; ord. in Eng. sett. in King George and Lancaster counties, Va.; sett. Sittingbourne Par. (King George) Va., 1701; Ep.; d. Sittingbourne Parish, 1701.[4]
John Bertrand is listed as a qualifying ancestor by The Huguenot Society of America. [5]
John Bertrand married Charlotte Dejolie on 29 September 1686 in Saint Paul Covent Garden, Westminster, London, England.[3] [6] Known children include:
William Bertrand, abt.1687-abt.1760
Maryann Bertrand, 1690-1750
Charlotte Bertrand[7]
John was Rector at Saint Mary's Whitechapel Episcopal Church, Sittingbourne Parish, from 1692 until his death in 1701.[8] Sittingbourne Parish was part of Richmond County, Virginia, from 1692 to 1732.
Belle Isle State Park
Belle Isle State Park is located in Lancaster County, Virginia, on the Rappahannock River.[9] The property was acquired in 1692 by John Bertrand, a Huguenot. The center or main portion of the Belle Isle residence was built by his son William Bertrand prior to 1759, when William's will was written mentioning the residence. It was inherited by his grandson Thomas Bertrand Griffin. It was added on to in later years and suffered some removal of interior paneling, etc. It was restored after 1940. It is today "an excellent example of a small but formal Tidewater plantation complex. The residence itself is a classic essay in Virginia Georgian architecture.[2]
Note on Places John Bertrand Lived
Following the records for where John Bertrand lives can be confusing. The Colonial Clergy of Virginia, North Carolina, and South Carolina states John settled in Sittingbourne Parish, King George County, Virginia, where he died in 1701. King George did not exist until it was formed from Richmond County in 1720-1721, twenty years after John died.
Sources also say John was in Old Rappahanock County and/or Lancaster County. Lancaster was formed from Northumberland in 1651 and Old Rappahanock County from Lancaster in 1656. Richmond was formed from Old Rappahanock County in 1692 and Old Rappahanock ceased to exist.
To clarify a bit, I think it is safe to say that John settled originally in Sittingbourne Parish, Old Rappahanock County, sometime between 1686 and 1692 when the County became Richmond County. He then lived in Sittingbourne Parish, Richmond County, from 1692 until his death in 1701.
