Isabel de Warenne, 4th Countess of Surrey (died 12 July 1203) was an English peeress. She was the only surviving heir of William de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey and his wife, Adela, the daughter of William III of Ponthieu.

In 1148, de Warenne inherited her father's lands and the earldom of Surrey and was married to William of Blois, the younger son of King Stephen, that year. The marriage occurred at a critical moment in The Anarchy as part of the king's attempt to control the de Warenne lands. The couple did not have any children and after William's death in 1159, William X, Count of Poitou sought her hand in 1162/3, but Thomas Becket refused a dispensation from affinity on the grounds of consanguinity.

In April 1164, the countess married Hamelin Plantagenet, the half-brother of King Henry II, who became jure uxoris Earl of Surrey.

They had four surviving children:

William, later 6th Earl of Surrey (1166-1240)

Adela (born c. 1170), married Robert of Naburn and William FitzWilliam and was also a mistress of King John.

Isabel (died 30 November 1234), married Robert de Lacy and Gilbert de l'Aigle, Lord of Pevensey.

Matilda, married Henry, Count of Eu and Henry de Stuteville.

Hamelin died in 1202 and the countess a year later. She was buried alongside him in the chapter house of Lewes Priory.

Life

She was the great-granddaughter of the first Norman earl, William I and his Flemish wife Gundred.[2] When her father died in the Holy Land c.1148 she inherited the earldom of Surrey and was married to William of Blois, the younger son of King Stephen, who became Earl in her right.[1][2] The marriage occurred at a critical moment in The Anarchy as part of the king's attempt to control the de Warenne lands. The couple did not have any children and after William's death in 1159, William X, Count of Poitou sought her hand in 1162/3, but Thomas Becket refused a dispensation from affinity on the grounds of consanguinity. In April 1164, the countess married Hamelin of Anjou, a natural half-brother of King Henry II, who became jure uxoris Earl of Surrey. The countess lived an unusually long life, dying at age 73.[2]

Robert of Torigny records the marriage in 1164 of "Hamelinus naturalis frater regis Henrici" and "comitissam de Guarenna, relictam Willelmi comitis Moritoni filii Stephani regis, …filia tercii Willermi comitis de Guaren na"[844].     Isabella de Warenne was born circa 1136.1 She was the daughter of William III de Warenne, 3rd Earl of Surrey and Ela Talvas.2 She married, firstly, William of Boulogne de Blois, 4th Earl of Surrey, son of Stephen de Blois, King of England and Matilda, Comtesse de Boulogne, circa 1149.1 She married, secondly, Hamelin d'Anjou, 5th Earl of Surrey, son of Geoffrey V Plantagenet, Comte d'Anjou et Maine and Adelaide of Angers, in April 1164.1 She died on 13 July 1199.1 She was buried at Chapter House, Lewes Priory, Lewes, Sussex, England.1

He died s.p. as above in October I 159 and was buried in the hospital of Montmorillon in Poitou. Isabel survived him and was sought in marriage by Henry Il's brother William, but Archbishop Beket opposed the match on the ground of consanguinity, and she married, 2ndly, the King's illegitimate half-brother, Hamelin. He [Hamelin Plantagenet] married, in 1164 (probably in April), Isabel, widow of William (OF BLOIS) 4th EARL OF SURREY, and only daughter and heir of William (DE WARENNE), 3rd EARL OF SURREY, all above-named. He died 7 May 1202 and was buried in the Chapter House at Lewes. Isabel survived him and made gifts for the soul of her late husband to the priory of St. Katherine, Lincoln, and to Lewes Priory. She was living in April 1203 but died probably soon afterwards, possibly 12 July 1203, and was buried in the Chapter House at Lewes (g). [Complete Peerage XII/1:499-500]

He took the name of Warren to preserve the House of Warren. This was seldom allowed-Warrens too powerful. Henry II & Hamelin were children of the count of Anjou. Normans ?off the throne-Plantagenet on the throne of England .
