This is likely most often due to the book 'Pioneers of Massachusetts' by Charles Henry Pope, 1st published in 1900 and reprinted in 2009, ISBN #ISBN: 9780806307749.

Husband Richard created the family cemetery on their farmland which became known as "Dodge Row" and their graves are not marked in modern day (2009) both Edith and Richard's are remembered at that family cemetery, but their exact location of burial is not known.

There is a site on the Web operated by The Mary and John Clearing House. They track information about the first immigrants to come to MA on the Mary and John. One of those immigrants was Richard Dodge. The Clearing House has published a series of reports summarizing research that has been done. Their Website indicated that Volume 26 of this series included new information confirming that Richard Dodge had two wives. I finally was able to review a copy of Volume 26. The second wife is known to be Edith Woodbury, but they propose that his first wife was Edith Brayne.

They have a professional researcher named Robin Bush who is reported to have found a record of marriage for Richard Dodge of Middle Chinnock to Edith Bra(-) at Stoke-sub-Hamdon dated 5 May 1628. The brides full name was lost because of damage to the original document, but some testing suggests the next letter was a "y" and research of local records found two possible candidates. One was dispensed with as being married to someone else ( and she seems a bit too old). Birth records for the other candidate indicate she was baptized 17 May 1608 at Stoke.

The conclusions proposed by the Clearing House suggest that Edith Brayne was the first wife of Richard, and the mother of his first three children. They further propose that Edith Brayne was the daughter of Edward and Elizabeth Braine/Brayne of Stoke-sub-Hamdon. Based on a search of local records, Edward is said to be the son of Thomas Braine "the elder" and Joan Hickes (daughter of John Hickes).

Biography

Richard John got married to Edith on May 05, 1628 in East Coker England. Some believe he married Edith Woodbury, but other sources say he married Edith Brayne. Edith Woodbury was born in 1603 in East Coker, whereas Edith Brayne was born on May 17, 1608 in Hamden, Somerset. It is most likely he married Edith Woodbury, since more sources reference her and Richard John was from East Coker.

Richard John and Edith immigrated to America in 1638 without royal permission. They arrived in Salem, Massachusetts to join Richard John's brothers, William and Michael; William having arrived nearly ten years earlier, on June 29, 1629.

After moving to America, Richard and Edith lived on William’s land for awhile, but then moved to "Dodge Row" in North Beverly, not far from Wenham Lake. In 1637 or 1638 Richard was given ten acres of land in Salem and on September 26, 1638 the two brothers received 40 acres of land comprising the area between Salem and "Dodge Row" in North Beverly. Richard further pushed his land boundaries into modern day Beverly and into the "Wenham Neck." Richard and Edith's house was near or on the town line between Wenham and Beverly.
