Chaim Yossef Levanon

Chaim Levanon (1899–1986): חיים לבנון‎ was an Israeli politician and mayor of Tel Aviv between 13 April 1953 and 1959.

Personal life

Levanon was born in Kraków, Poland, in 1899 as Chaim Yosef Levinstein. After graduating from a yeshiva, he studied agricultural engineering at the Jagiellonian University.

He made aliyah in 1927 and taught at the Ehad HaAm gymnasium in Petah Tikva. In 1928 he married Miriam Levit Shamrot.

Political activity

Levanon was one of the founders of the General Zionists youth movement, and later one of its leaders. He also founded and headed the Civilian Housing organization. In 1936 he served as the chairman of the election committee in Tel Aviv and the secretary-general of the General Zionists' labor union. In 1951 he was elected to Tel Aviv's city council and served as the deputy mayor from 1952. Due to Israel Rokach's resignation and ministerial appointment, he was elected mayor by the city council on 13 April 1953. In 1955, Levanon was publicly re-elected into office.

Levanon was the main founder of the Tel Aviv University, which he helped advance even after his mayoral tenure, and one of its main streets was named after him following his death.

חיים לבנון (לוינשטיין) (25 במרץ 1899 – 21 באוגוסט 1986) היה איש ציבור ישראלי, חבר מפלגת הציונים הכלליים, ראש עיריית תל אביב-יפו בשנים 1953–1959.

קורות חיים

לבנון נולד בשנת 1899 בעיר קרקוב שבגליציה בשם חיים יוסף לוינשטיין. לאחר שסיים את לימודיו התיכוניים למד הנדסה חקלאית והוסמך כמהנדס באוניברסיטת קרקוב. בשנת 1927 עלה לארץ ישראל ולימד בגימנסיה "אחד העם" שבפתח תקווה, היה פעיל פוליטי, והיה אחד ממייסדי תנועת הנוער הציוני הכללי, ולאחר מכן כיהן כאחד מראשי התנועה. כמו כן היה פעיל במוסדות תנועת הציונים הכלליים.

לבנון ייסד את חברת "שיכון אזרחי" והיה אחד ממנהליה. ממייסדי העיתון "הבוקר" ומנהלו. בשנת 1934 כיהן כיושב ראש ועדת הבחירות של עיריית תל אביב, וכן כמזכיר הכללי של הסתדרות הציונים הכלליים בארץ ישראל. הוא נמנה עם חברי מסדר הבונים החופשיים. בשנת 1950 נבחר לכהן כחבר מועצת עיריית תל אביב וכסגן ראש העיר מטעם סיעת הציונים הכלליים, ולאחר שבשנת 1953 מונה ראש העירייה ישראל רוקח לשר הפנים, מונה סגנו - לבנון - לכהן כראש עיריית תל אביב.

לבנון יזם והקים את אוניברסיטת תל אביב, והרחוב שבו היא שוכנת נקרא על שמו. הוא נפטר בשנת 1986 ונקבר בבית הקברות טרומפלדור שבתל אביב.
