About Captain William Speight
William was the second SPEIGHT born in America (after Brother John). He married in 1674 (wife name unknown). In 1675 he purchased 137 acres of land north of his father's plantation in Sunbury. He then purchased an additional 117 acres on the Barbiscue Swamp. In 1678 he purchased another 176 acres on Barbiscue Swamp along with one male indentured servant. He now owned 430 total acres of land.
William Speight became Tax Collector for Sunbury in 1695 and gained the title of Captain. He was one of the first tax collectors in the state of North Carolina and served for about five years. He was referred to as "Captain of Sunbury" or "William of Sunbury" until his death at age 66 in 1719.
