Origins
Joseph Collins wae probably grandson of William Collins, of the Isle of Wight, who obtained a grant of 561 acres of land in King and Queen County in 1635 . He arrived in Virginia May 15 that year, on the ship the Plain Joan", Richard Backam, Master.
This shipload of immigrants is recorded as having brought with them "attestations of their conformation to the orders and discipline of the Church of England." William Collins was 23 years old when he arrived in Virginia in 1635, and in 1691, in Book 8 of the King and Queen County records, he is listed as a merchant.
John Collins, father of Joseph married a daughter of Abraham Weeks (Order Book 1, 1686 Essex Co.). There was a Matthew Collins also who may have been uncle.
1718: Essex Co., VA, Deeds Vol. 16, pp. 51-54. December 26, 1718. A deed from William Hall to Thomas Johnson, both of King & Queen Co., for 200 acres in Essex County mentions Joseph Collins as owner of adjoining land. How Collins acquired his land in unknown. There is no deed to him of record in Essex Co. It is possible the deed was recorded in the General Court of the Colony or that, since the land was partly in King & Queen Co., it was recorded only in that county.
