Biography
Capt. John Montgomery was born in 1717 in County Donegal, Ulster, Ireland. His parents were Capt. James Montgomery and Anne Montgomery.
John married Ann Montgomery on November 28, 1753, in the Province of Virginia. Together they had the following children:
He died on August 14, 1805, in Fort Chiswell, Wythe County, Virginia, United States.

The statue of John Montgomery, a man whom many credit with the discovery of the site that would later become Clarksville, Tenn., is located in front of Clarksville City Hall, facing Strawberry Alley downtown. ...
Montgomery came to what is now Clarksville in 1784. He is said to have named the site after his friend, Gen. George Rogers Clark. While not the first person to travel through the area, Montgomery was the first to establish a temporary settlement here during a long hunting trip.
Scott Wise, a Clarksville firefighter and local sculptor, was selected to create the piece. Wise has created numerous pieces of civic art in Clarksville including “The Day After,” also located downtown.

He served as a Captain in the French and Indian Wars and received 3,000 acres in payment in 1780. From Feb. 15, 1770 served as Justice of Botetourte County, Virginia. On May 25, 1771 he bought 646 acres near Buffalo Lick on Reed Creek in present Wythe county, Va from Thomas Walker for 1910 pounds. He and his wife Agnes sold 135 acres of that to William Montgomery for 100 pounds on Aug. 1, 1771. John also served on the committee setting up Fincastle county Virginia in 1773. and as a Justice of the Courts of Chancery and Oyer and Terminer of that year.
