Berengar ll, of Neustria

Parentage unknown. Not the same as Berenger, comte de Bayeux (probably). His wife is said to have been the daughter of Gurwent [Gurvand], duc de Bretagne. Proposed as father of Poppa of Bayeux.

Berengar II (died 896) [??] was the Count of Bayeux and Rennes and Margrave of the Breton March from 886 until his death a decade later.

Guillaume of Jumièges records that Charles III "le Simple" King of the West Franks granted "terram maritimam ab Eptæ flumine usque ad Britannicos limites" together with "sua filia...Gisla" to Rollo who renounced his campaigns, that the king added "tota Britannia" and that “ipsius provinciæ principibus Berengerio atque Alanno” swore allegiance to Rollo[523].

Certainties

Little is known about his family. Certain or almost certain facts concerning him are:
One theory gives him a daughter Poppa , known as from Bayeux , who was kidnapped by the Normans around 892 and married to one of their chiefs, Rollo , the future count of Rouen . They will be the ancestors of the ducal house of Normandy.

This name of Poppa is to be compared to the count of Grabfeld Poppon II, Germanic duke of the Popponian family , and brother of the Marquis Henri , the predecessor of Bérenger. Bérenger is considered to be either a son or a son-in-law of Henri.

chronicler Dudon de Saint-Quentin presents Count Bernard de Senlis 2 as the maternal uncle of Guillaume Longue-Épée , son of Rollo and Poppa.

From these different facts, two hypotheses were put forward:

Assumption 1: Berenger's son Henry

In this case, to explain his first name, as well as the choice of his person for the Marquisate of Neustria, he would be the grandson of Gebhard de Lahngau, and therefore the son or nephew of Bérenger , who was briefly Marquis of Neustria. His wife is therefore a daughter of Henri , Marquis de Neustrie, and Ingeltrude de Frioul.

This hypothesis, the oldest, poses the problem of the relationship between Guillaume Longue-Épée and Bernard de Senlis, because the latter is also presented as a son of Guy de Senlis, and his mother is probably from the house of Vermandois. He actually only has a distant family link (first cousin) with Poppa. The explanation given is that Berenger, monopolized by his defenses against the Normans, entrusted him to his parents, the counts of Senlis, who would have raised him in their home.

Assumption 2: Bérenger is the son of Henry

Recently, another hypothesis was formulated on the premise that the name was carried by Berenger Berenger I first king of Italy, Emperor, and brother of Marquis Henri Berenger would be son of Henry and Marquis of Ingeltrude Friuli, sister Berenger I er , and would have just succeeded his father in his honor it . As a result, nothing prevents proposing Poppa's mother as an issue of the house of Vermandois , married first to Bérenger and second to Guy, Count of Senlis.

From his unknown wife (some propose the first names of Cunégonde or Adèle for onomastic reasons), he had:

• certainly Poppa de Bayeux , kidnapped then married more danico to Rollo .
• probably a girl married to a count of Rennes, and mother of Juhel Bérenger , count of Rennes
• probably Wendigarde, married to Udalrich, count of Linzgau and Thurgau, mother of Bérenger, count of Thurgau, and of Burkhard, abbot of Saint-Gall.

Of course, this is all theoretical... Married a daughter of Gurwant de Rennes.
