MEMORIAL PHOTOS 5 FLOWERS 0 Armilda Barnett was born January 28, 1822, in Bourbon Co., Ky. She was the second of thirteen children, and out-lived them all except the youngest brother. When she was eight years old, her mother died, and soon after they moved to Indianola. Vermilion Co., Ill. On April 15, 1847, she was united in marriage to Geo. M. Yapp. This union was blessed with six children, two of whom died in infancy. The remaining four, Geo. M. James J., William E., and Mary E. Yapp, survive their mother and were with her during her last moments on earth. She also leaves thirteen grandchildren. Her husband died in Illinois April 27, 1857, when the youngest child. Geo. M. Yapp was but three weeks old. After her husband's death, sister Yapp devoted her life to her children, and in the fall of 1871 brought them to Kansas, taking a homestead on West Limestone. She has continued to reside in this vicinity caring for her children until in her advanced life, they in turn have given her every attention. In 1873 Lizzie Bachrens, a motherless child five years old, was taken to be reared by Mrs. Yapp. Lizzie was cared for and loved as a daughter, and rendered in return the love and obedience of a daughter. She made her home with Mrs. Yapp until married to Edgar Rose.

Sister Yapp was converted to God fifty years ago this winter, her husband having experienced this great spiritual change a short time before her. She united with the M. E. church of which she has since continued to be a consistent member. Sister Yapp found her Savior able to save and sustain through the painfully trying weeks of her last illness. Her patient endurance was truly wonderful. When informed that her foot must be amputated, and that possibly she would not survive, she calmly considered the matter for a few moments and then said firmly, “Then you had better set the day." She was prepared to go and had no fear of the future. Her love for her children was the only tie which bound her to earth. She departed early Thursday morning January 26th, '05, firmly expecting to greet her husband and departed children on the golden shore. She lacked but two days of completing her 83d year. Rev. L. On March 16, 1833 the Probate Court in Vermilion County Illinois appointed James Barnett legal guardian for Armilda and her five siblings: Nancy, Chrystian, Sarah, William, and Robert. Their last name was Barnett and all were under age 14. James Barnett had married his first wife Hannah Conaway on July 9, 1818 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. He married his second wife Rosanna Neal in September, 1830 in Bourbon County, Kentucky. They soon moved to Vermilion County, Illinois.

James Barnett and his first wife Hannah have generally been assumed to be the biological parents of Armilda and her siblings; however, that may not be correct given the guardian records. James Barnett could have become legal guardian for children he took in when a relative died, or he could have been appointed legal guardian for his own children if they inherited assets, such as from a maternal grandfather. The former was much more common, but the latter sometimes occurred. With currently available information, it is not possible to determine what actually happened in this case. The records for Armilda in the 1880 and 1900 censuses have her father born in Ohio, which is not consistent with James Barnett being her father, However, the 1880 US census for her brother William has his father born in Pennsylvania, which is consistent with James Barnett being his father. Seven children were born to James and Rosanna in addition to the six for which he was appointed guardian.
