1693: Benjamin READE of York Co., VA left a legacy to his "niece Anne CARY, daughter of Mr. Henry CARY." (3b,7b) Her aunt, Anne LOCKEY, married a READE, presumably Thomas READE, who may have been brother to Benjamin READE. Benjamin might have called himself Anne CARY's uncle because his brother had married her aunt. In any event the Oxford dictionary gives examples of the use of "niece" in the general sense of kinswoman.
Anne Cary Langhorne remarried, a member of another prominent Tidewater family, Benjamin Harrison II of Charles City County. Until John Langhorne III (1695-1767) reached his majority, the Harrison family operated Gambell plantation. For the next twenty years, John Langhorne would spend his days in the polite atmosphere of the Cary plantation. Jan 1698/99:Ann LANGHORN was recognized as his administratrix in a court docket of actions carried over from the previous November, including a report of the viewing of Waters Creek Mill, and new cases and actions for debt. "Ann LANGHORNE adminx of Maurice LANGHORNE decd bringing her action of debt against Robert HUBBARD administrator de bonis non of the estate of Francis RICE deceased during the minority of Mary RICE the only daughter of the said Francis RICE for 5 pounds eighteen shillings and six pence owed by bill under the defts hand bearing the date the 10th of April 1695 to which the deft by his attorney appeared and preyed an (impartance) to the next court, which is grant him accordingly.

The will, 1693, of Benjamin Reade, in York records, leaving legacy to "niece Anne Cary, daughter of Mr. Henry Cary" (W. M. Quar., iii, 40). Anne Lockey, sister of the wife of Henry Cary2, married a Reade, presumably Thomas Reade (see Bruton parish register, 1712), who may have been the brother of this testator Benjamin Reade; in that case Benjamin might have called himself Anne Cary's uncle because his brother had married her aunt. In any event the Oxford Dictionary gives examples of the use of "niece" in the general sense of kinswoman. Anne Cary is called Anne Stuckey in her father's will, which is the only evidence for the marriage. Her husband has not been identified
