Anna Aertse Vanderbeek

Anna Aertsen MIDDAGH was born before 1673. While it is reported in the LDS Ancestral File that she was born in 1674, records in the Municipal Archives of Hei en Boeicop (No. 741) indicate her mother Brecktje died in Hei-en Boeicop and was buried there about 1672/73. Therefore the latest she could have been born was in 1672/3. It is more likely she was born before the family left Brooklyn to go back to Holland in 1671. It also is possible, though there is no supporting evidence, she and Joris were twins. Consequently her birth, in this compilation, is listed as "before 1673".

Dr. George McCracken's article in Vol. 35 of The American Genealogist, states no record of her baptism has been found. However, he accepts her as a child of Aert and Brecktje as do several other genealogists, including Bergen and Allaben. In addition she is listed as one of the Aert's children who sailed with him when he returned to the colonies from Holland in the Spring of 1683.

While no record of the birth or baptism of either her or Dirck has been found, there is a period of about six years, 1665 to 1671 when Aert and Breckje could have had children. It most likely was during this period that both Dirck and Anna were born. In some records Anna is referred to as Annetje.

She married Abraham REMSEN about 1693. While no marriage record has been found Anna and Abraham REMSEN are listed as the parents in church records of the baptism of their children. LDS Ancestral File, Ver. 4.16, indicates Anna married Abraham VANDERBEECK rather than Abraham REMSEN. However, the baptismal records all show the father's name as REMSEN.

In an e-mail message dated 11/15/1996 from Ms. Virginia Koeplinger, Ms. Koeplinger states Anna married Abraham REMSEN, born 9/14/1667 at Newton, NY. She also states he was the son of Rem JANSEN whose surname was actually VANDERBEECK. Ms. Koeplinger further states Rem (Abraham's father) was from Leveren, Westphalia and that he had moved to Coevorden, Drenth Holland before emigrating to the colonies. She also indicated Rem had married twice the first time to ????? DERAPALJE on 12/21/1642 and the second time to Jannetje VOORHEES. Unfortunately, she did not indicate which marriage resulted in the birth of Abraham. Other information indicates Abraham was the s/o Jannetje RAPALJE. Abraham was born 16 Sep 1667 in Brooklyn, Kings, NY and died 13 Dec 1752.

Abraham and Anna had at least the 5 children listed. All were born in New York (probably Long Island). They may also have had other children because there are "gaps" in the birthdates of their known children that lead to speculation about the possibility of other children. One such child may have been named Jacob because the will of William VAN DUYN indicates he had a daughter, Catherine, who was the wife of Jacob REMSEN. William had another daughter, Magheltie, who married Abraham REMSEN. Since it was common at the time for sisters (or brothers) to marry brothers of their sister's husband, it is likely Jacob REMSEN was a son of Abraham.
