Union Veteran.
At the age of 18, Andrew enlisted in the Indiana Calvalry, from Plymouth, on December 22, 1863. This was just 5 months after the Battle of Gettysburg. He was assigned to Company E, 12th Regiment. He joined for a 3 year term. For the next 20 months, Andrew fought in the South; with campaigns in Tennessee, Alabama, and Mississippi. He fought in the battle of Vicksburg in September-October 1864. He was honorably discharged at Vicksburg. While in the line of duty in Tuluhama, Tennessee, in Sept. 1864, he contracted severe diarrhea and suffered from dysentery. This resulted in severely impaired vision. In addition to active duty, he served as a guard at the brig commisary in June 1865.
Andrew Gast died on June 5, 1922, at the age of 77, in Fresno. At the time, he was living at 851 South 'S' Street, Fresno.
